I don't
push the glass into the base bead at all. I just let the dot color rod (or stringer -- easier to control!) get a semi-molten gather on it and then just touch the gather to the base bead (which is fairly cool, come to think of it). Lift it up and let the flame cut it.
I most heartily recommend finding an experienced person to watch do this. It's kind of hard to explain in words but a cinch to show someone. If you can't find anyone to show you this, then the next best thing is Brad and Deanna's book, Dots --->
