Just wanted to add another little lesson learned. I have a firebrick kiln from Arrow Springs, and it sits just to my right, so this is easy for me to do. Your mileage may vary, but maybe you can make it work too.

When I use a Devardi rod, I let the end cool just enough to not be molten anymore, then lay it on top of the kiln. It's warm enough that the rods cool slower, and I don't get shocky tips which will blow up on me the next time. When the kiln is cooled down, I 'harvest' them from the top and put them where I want them for next time. Without doing this, I was getting deep cracks as the rods cooled, which would basically pop off with the next use, as I was warming them to molten--no matter how slow I reheated the ends, I was getting shrapnel.
