It could be that your fan is under powered just enough that some strong winds are "over powering" it and forcing fumes back into your studio.

Any chance that your "make up air" is getting mixed with your exhaust?

If I remember right someone said you need at least ten feet from your exhaust end to the nearest possible source of make up air.
