No one has yet mentioned encasing the goldstone in medium amethyst. I picked up this hint from Corina years ago (in her book and also on the forum). It makes beautiful gold stringer with no hint of purple.
I agree that the commercial stringers and rods are pretty pathetic compared to what you can do on your own with good quality materials. I've always bought mine from Arrow Springs, so there's another source to try.
