I would agree - I don't mount any of my pieces, and while I have not done any basse-taille (yet), I do a lot of cloisonne, and have not had any trouble. But, to me it's a matter of personal taste and aesthetics, and some pieces just look nicer when in a mounting. Mine tend to be more informal.
I do run the enamel to the edge.
