It's called "bead release" . You have to dip your mandrels (the steel rods that you make the beads on) in bead release and let it dry before you can start putting the hot glass on them.
If you didn't use bead release, the glass would stick (permanently) to the rods.
It comes right off with water when you're ready to remove the bead.
