I'm not sure about striking glass, but with reducing glass, I always try to make sure I'm definitely NOT in a reducing flame until the very last few minutes when it's on a bead.
Striking silver glass I try to only heat once, and not heat to white hot, so I don't over strike when I actually use it. Not sure if this is necessary or not.
