Default OK to not have kiln on bench?

I've been doing a lot of boro work, where it doesn't matter as much, but am toying with the idea of doing some soft glass again. I share a kiln with a studio mate, and the kiln is probably three steps from my bench. It can't move.

Question is, is there a way to ensure integrity of the bead for the duration of time it takes me to get off my butt, jaunt over to the kiln and garage it? I'm guessing it takes 5-7 (literal) seconds. Am I over worried about this?

I thought of dunking it in perlite or some such thing before heading over, but this adds potentially unnecessary time to the whole thing.

I know most lamp workers put their kiln right on their workspace, but I can't do this. Can I work this out?

Thanks,

TA
