Metal fan blades
Question? I thought I booked marked what I was reading and now I can't find it... I read something that said that if a fan has metal blades it could spark and ignite the fumes from the torch.. but don't most of the blowers ect have metal blades? eeesh

The "fumes" are the byproduct of combustion process.... The energy has already been used to create the flame to melt the glass.... Its highly unlikely the metal fan blades will cause any sort of combustion (explosion) ....

Oh thank you Dale! I was hoping you would give your input! I have been reading up on safety and I've learned alot from your and everyones posts. I have a picture of a ventilation system I'd like your opinion on if you don't mind. I'm new at this so I will try to see if I can post the link. Thanks for your time!

Dale I ran across another post where someone had almost the same unit... I will take your comments there into consideration, thank you!

I think if 'fumes' were able to be ignited by a fan blade, you would already be sick as a dog and so forth.

Why would you have something that could be ignited unless you were about to light it? I don't get this whole discussion. I must be missing something.

I really think that unit is to hard to adapt to a proper ventilation system and its not equipped to attach ducts to and if you do, you don't know how much it will cut the efficiency of the fan once all the adaptation and ducts are added...
Just because you see others do it doesn't not always mean it is the best thing to do or be best solution......

Thanks Dale, there actually is a duct you can puchase for it (bottom of the page on the link) We'll see what I come up with, if I do try it I will test it and I have some creative men in my family that might come up with some ideas.

Vivian,
People new to lampworking in general and unfamiliar with the aspects of fuels, gases and combustion are often confused and misled by partial information and myths. Jonibird was/is concerned that a spark from a metal fan blade might ignite fuels or gas in the studio without realizing that that fuel was already burned.
Jonibird, check out the wetcanvas forum and search for posts by MikeE (If I recall correctly) as he has used and advocates just such a fan and has instructions on how he set it up.
