Default Offer for Beads of Courage

We'd like to offer help too.
We want to offer a $15 gift certificate for 10 beads sent.

Anyone that mails me 10 glow beads - I will give the gift certificate.
My only requirement is that beads are larger than 3/8" in diameter and a limit of 30 beads per person.

Once I have beads I will then box them all up and forward them on to BOC.

Let me know!

This is a great thing for the kiddos and I'd like to offer my support to beadmakers.
Keep in mind $15 can buy you 3 - 5g bags of Glow Powder
and it only takes about a gram of glow to make 10 beads.

Love to everyone supporting this great cause - Happy Beading and Way to Glow!

I'd make gads of glow beads if I had glow powder!! I may just have to put that on my shopping list on Friday (payday ;0) ~ Sandy

Is there a time limited on this generous offer?

I personally think the aqua has the brightest glow, but the yellow-green is pretty close too.

Not sure how long we are going to offer, I guess we'll see how we do.
BTW we have 5g bags of glow on sale for 45% less than list price!

My glow beads are a white base bead, bright blue glow powder and encasement in aquamarine transparent. It gives a fantastic Cerenkov Radiation blue (the color seen in a real reactor) and glows for hours. Our kids here in Atlanta love them and I'm told that they're quite popular around the country where they ended up.

What is the easiest way to make glow beads? I have a little powder and a couple of short glow stix. I'm a boro newbie working on a Mega Minor and 8 LPM Oxycon. So the simplest bead formula would be appreciated.

Do I have to encase, or can I make a simple solid bead rolled in glow powder or a simple solid bead with a glow stringer? Is white the best base color? And what is the best base color if my glow stix are white?

Thanks ever so!

Liz

Hi Liz!

It sounds like you have a couple of options at your disposal.

With the glow powder you can do one of two things:

Make a bead, roll it in the powder, give a tap to shake the excess, give it a quick and gentle heat in the flame, then encase with a layer of clear or transparent.

Or make and pull a rod with the stuff. Make a lollypop with clear , heat one side, lay it in the glow powder, quick gentle heat to help it stick, then lay clear or transparent over top of the glow to encase it then pull it out into a rod and continue from there.

With the glow stix, give them a good wash to make sure they're clean of factory schmutz (i.e. refractory residue from the molds), preheat them in the kiln, punty up and pull them down into a thick stringer. You can then lay this down over your base color, and then encase with a transparent or clear.

I always encase because glow can cook out while you're shaping if you're not careful, encasing helps keep that from happening, at least in my experience.

Red's don't do so well over top of glow since it blocks the light that charges the stuff, but greens and blues work nicely.

The base of the glow powder and the glow stix is going to look white, so use something complimentary underneath.

Oh, and you might consider running your kiln a little hotter (1100 or so) with the boro glow; it likes heat.

Hope that helps!

I made 5 beads with the aqua glow powder today. What an awesome product. These beads are so cool! I'm going to try another glow color tomorrow.

Well, of the 5 beads I made yesterday, 2 cracked. I used moretti white as a base, rolled them in the glow powder, and encased with dark transparent aqua. Any suggestions?

I'd defer to Joe, but if I were to guess I'd say bump up the heat slightly in the kiln so the powder layer cools a little more slowly than it did.

Tom, they look like incompatibility cracks. If no one else has had this problem, I am wondering if I got a rod of BE mixed in with my moretti.

I usually put these beads in the kiln pretty hot and the continue to turn the mandrels while they cool to kiln temp slowly for about 30 seconds before I put them down. I very rarely get any cracking.
