Any enamelists in the house?
I've developed a recent obsession/fascination for basse taille enameling. I'm seeing some pieces that are in settings and some pieces that are not. I'm having trouble figuring out if the piece should be in a setting or not.
If I have a piece that is not in a setting, am I risking the durability/longevity of the piece?
Thanks!

I think it depends on if the enamel extends to the edge ... it's likelier to chip if it does, so it would be better to mount it. If there's a thick/wide enough margin of copper on the edge I don't think you'd need it.

I would agree - I don't mount any of my pieces, and while I have not done any basse-taille (yet), I do a lot of cloisonne, and have not had any trouble. But, to me it's a matter of personal taste and aesthetics, and some pieces just look nicer when in a mounting. Mine tend to be more informal.
I do run the enamel to the edge.

Thanks you two! It's a new adventure for me and I feel the way I felt when I discovered lampworking. Been reading like mad. I'm not finding tons of info on the basse taille. Oddly enough, it's an idea that's been in my head for a while, I just didn't have the word for it until a few days ago.
Champleve and Cloisonne have also caught my eye. I see a whole new world of trouble coming my way

Gotta love LE - there's always someone available to help you get into new trouble LOL
Thanks especially for that last link - I didn't know where to get the Japanese enamels.
My current favorite eye candy link is this one:

Some of his work just makes my heart flutter.
