Default Jewelry from Skyy Vodka bottles?

I remember someone posted a link to a woman's website - she cut up and tumbles bottles and then made jewelry out of them. Does anyone remember who it is? I am trying to find the link and can't!

Which brings me to the question - where do people find beach glass???? I have combed beaches for YEARS hoping to find some and never have. Could it be that South Australian's are too clean for that? Is it common? Am i just doing it wrong?

Ah yes, Bombay Sapphire is the bottles she uses - that is why I couldn't find it!

I've been making beads from recycled glass for years. Here's
a bracelet made with beads from Skyy Vodka bottles.

Most of my neighbors know I make jewelry. So when I wanted
to start using glass bottles, I put the word out that if anyone
had any bottles left over from the week that didn't make it into
the recycling bins - would they please drop them off at my house.

I had no idea I was surrounded by alcoholics. One call and I was
set for the next year. I can make beads until the cows learn
to tango and STILL have bottles left over .

Without sounding totally stupid, may i ask HOW?
I would really love to do this - i love the idea of recycled glass, and i have a friend who runs a night club so he could get me a few bottles.... I'm only using a hot head - would that be hot enough? I'd really REALLY love to do this!!

I bought a couple of plates at Goodwill with deep designs in them, broke them and tumbled the pieces a couple of months ago. I have never seen this person's jewelry. I just want that on record when someone claims I copied her. I didn't I thought it out of my own brain cells. lol

And I'm not joking. I just haven't used them for anything yet, but I have the pieces all tumbled.

I know that feeling Kevan. I have been looking for some beach glass (blue or green) for ages, and i wanted to have it fit a certain size for a specific project. I haven't found any, then i see this ladies' site and think "crap...that's a lot like what i was thinking". I hate thinking that some day someone will look at something i made and say "hey - you copied so and so"

But you know what? I remember on a different forum i used to be part of there was a jewellery challenge. I thought i had come up with THE most brilliant, clever, original idea that would totally blow everyone away. I planned it carefully, i didn't consult with or tell anyone because i didn't want to influence anyone else's idea, and i secretly went about my business. The day before i had the last tiny bit finished off i happened across a different part of the forum and found someone had done something pretty much identical to my big secret plan and posted it 3 days earlier. I was SO GUTTED!! I thought everyone would call me a thief and at the very least say i was 'inspired' by the other person. It just blew me away that two people could look at their beads and see the same thing - especially when we were looking at different beads!!

I've had a few pieces where i've later found something very similar, and i have been inspired by pieces too. I figure whatever i do, someone else is bound to be doing it SOMEWHERE, so i have relaxed somewhat. What i found depressing was her computer keys jewellery. I joked the other day to my DH i was going to make beads out of his keyboard to wear to his work dinner that say L33T because it's a software engineering firm, and they'd all get the joke. Now when i do it, i'll post a pic and everyone will say "oh - you got that from the chick who made the recycled glass beads". Damnit. Maybe i won't make it now.... it's not as clever as i thought... sigh...

Besides Kevan - she did glass, not plates. Plates is TOTALLY original

Karen,
those beads are LOVELY!!!!
im really into recycling as i live on a small island (5km by 15km approx, less than 2thousand residents, but 24 thousand tourists a year) and im concerned about pollution of our beautiful beaches. I pick up sea gass all the time, and wil use some for jewellery... I also want to use recycled bottles as...they are readily available from the resorts, they are FREE, it helps with waste management,i can SELL the beads/jewellery... but lik lampymama, i use a HH. Can you share some tips???? please. and post some more pics??? id love to see some morebeads from bottles. are your coloursmainly green, clear, and brown?? thanks heaps

Gee Steph, I'd love to share my secrets - but I'll have to show them to
you. So (sigh) I guess I'll have to travel to the Cook Islands and hang out with you. What a sacrifice on MY part.....

Ok - seriously - here's how I do it. Mind you - there are better ways of doing
this, but none have worked for me.

First I score the bottles lengthwise - about 1" apart. Does this help? I don't
know - sometimes it does, sometimes it really doesn't.

Then I put the bottle in a paper bag and hit it with a hammer.

I pull out the larger pieces and use those.

Using the torch, I melt the larger pieces into big blobs and pull rods (very
thick stringers from the bigger chunks.

Note: If the scoring worked, then there should be some 1" wide pieces that
you can use by themselves. If not, pull rods from the chunks.

Then you make beads. Anneal using a regular schedule for 104 or 90 COE.

Do NOT mix bottle glass. Sometimes they will be different COEs and then
the beads will crack.

tips: You can use thinner stringers to paint raised designs or scrolling
patterns on the beads - they look great. You can also etch these beads
and get a great beach glass look to them.

I saw that bracelet of Karen's at Glass Stock and have been stalking liquor bottles ever since then! I'm either gonna have to rely on alcoholic neighbors or start likin' vodka, 'cause the Skyy vodka bottles are so pretty!!!

Sad when you go pick the brand of liquor you're going to drink based on the color of its bottle....

For those of you who want to know more about Beach Glass there is a wonderful book out titled "Pure Sea Glass, Discovering Nature's Vanishing Gems by Richard LaMotte". I purchased a copy from Borders last month and it is awsome! Tells were to find, appraising rarity, history of glass, condition, colors and tons more. It's a great coffee table book as the photos are gorgeous.

Karen,
Those beads and the bracelet are beautiful. I had no idea you could do that with bottles! Thanks so much for telling how you did it. I may actually try it one day!

Sweetheart, you live in LV. You can't throw a stone and not hit a bar.
Go to the casinos and make friendly with the bartenders. Tell them
what you are doing and ask them to save bottles for you. In about
two nights, you'll be stocked for the year.

I only mention this because I got on a binge of making these brown
ones from this obscure Japanese beer bottles. I didn't feel like
becoming a boozer, so I hit up the local sushi bar and asked them
to save the bottles for me. They were more than happy to.

Thanks Karen...sounds like something i can do!!!
the locals already think im a bit weird...so I'll add to it by wanting nice booze bottles, NOT with the booze in them tho...that will just blow them away!!!
oh, and anytime you want to head to the Cook Islands...DO let me know. LOVE to see you here n show you around......could call it a glass conference and claim it on tax??
Im the only jeweller and glass worker on Aitutaki, but theres artists and galleries on Rarotonga who always welcome artists in any medium coming this way....
ok..now off to find some nice bottles at the resorts d resturaunts.

Hee.

I was just talking to one of my coworkers about that. I'd be set for life...no way all those bottles are gonna fit in the uhaul when it's time to move!! Now, to get friendly with the bartenders....

Don't think it hadn't crossed my mind. But I"m shy. And I'm afraid they'll look at me like I"m smokin' crack.

I just might get over that, though.

Love it!

My first glass bracelets were beachglass and pebbles set in silver mountings ... oohhh about 10 - 12 years ago now - I then progressed to those glass blobs that they sell for aquariums or flowers ... then finally to the "real" thing!

I still have bags and bags of beach glass and likely pebbles everywhere! Here's a small sample.

OMGosh, I'm so glad I found this thread. A co-worker brought me an old broken glass today so I could make beads with it. It's the most gorgeous shade of cobalt. The glass has sentimental value for her, so I want to make a bracelet for her with the beads. Thanks for all the info, guys!
