Question editing background out of photo to showcase item

I don't know if this is even possible, but does anyone know if there is a way to edit out the background to just have an item showcased for selling on ebay? It looks like some of the things on ebay are almost suspended and if there is a way to do this and anyone knows how, I would appreciate a tutorial.
Thanks so much,
roy

I think this is the effect you are asking about:

I take pics that way sometimes...I use an upside down pie plate (clear glass) shoot down and the bead will appear to be floating. Use a piece of copy paper or construction paper on the bottom or light from underneath if you want to get fancy.

It's easy and gives wonderful results.

I went out and bought Photoshops Elements after reading Lori Greenberg's article on photographing beads. She tells how to crop out the background in this...I printed it off and refer back to it alot.

Hope this helps.
