Default sealing ventilation system

My sheet metal guy wants to use silicone to seal my vent system...this
doesn't sound right,I say foil tape.Who is right.lol.also is 4inch pipe big enough
for my exhaust?I used 8inch before with inline fan,Witt Simmons designed
ventilation.My studio is 8x8.

Thanks so much

I have 10 inch ducts and the joints are sealed with foil tape. Dont know if its proper but it works well.

Four inch IMO is too small. Consider at least a 7 to 10 inch depending on fan CFM. There is also a mastic that can be painted on the exterior joints for sealing that is used for forced air heating systems.

I'd consider 8 inch pipe as a minimum. Silicone should work but metal foil tape is fine and easy to use (not messy either). I use foil tape. You aren't running a high pressure system so silicone inside might be overkill. Mastic might be a good choice for weathering and durability if you have outdoor joints.

Yep 4 inch is way to small, 6 to 8 inch would be lot better....

It's all about duct velocity, CFM (volume) and noise.....

Silicone should not be a problem, foil tape is ok too....

Agree with all above. And will add that later if you want or need to make changes then silicone is messy to install and a PITA to remove and clean up the joints.

elbows.
Thanks again for your help I appreciate it so much...so will Mr V and Metal man.lol

Face opening of hood, duct diameter, and number of turns is all inter reactive so most dimensions and specs have to worked out in formulas...

Duct to small will be noisy and rubble and make noise.... Ducts to big will move air to slow and the hazardous (toxic) heavy metals used as colorants in glass will drop out of suspension (air flow) and creating a pile (microscopic) of contaminates in bottom of duct... Any time they are disturbed, they become a health hazard...

Getting ventilation correct is a science and you have to work out the values... After that its just assembly of "parts".... But the formulas determine the "size" of the parts...
