Default Rod rest in kiln?

Can you put one of those workbench metal rod holders in the kiln to use as an annealing rod holder? I'm not certain what kind of metal these are, so am not sure if it will hold up to kiln temperatures, or if it will crash & burn.

As long as it's stainless it should be fine. Careful about the elements!!!!!!
Why not get a piece of soft fire brick or mullite, or even kiln shelf legs.

Thanks, David. I don't know what metal these things are made of; that's why I'm uncertain about using it.

I have one of the kiln mandrel rests with all the holes, but it's very short. I've always taken some beads off the rest & laid them on the floor of the kiln when I need extra space, but for some reason a bunch of my beads are thermal cracking all of a sudden, & I don't understand why. If you knew how I heat up beads before putting them into the kiln, you'd know that I am more likely to error toward slumping beads than thermal cracks, so I've been trying to figure it out. Maybe the floor of the kiln doesn't keep them warm enough. I know that sounds really stupid, & probably completely untrue, but I don't want to think "kiln temp" & have to buy an expensive pyrometer to find out.

So I'm trying to blame the kiln floor.

ETA: And thanks, De! Posting at the same time. Did you see I posted a lampwork idiom for the AGLF t-shirts in your honor?? Heh. It was in the bathroom the other day.

No, but I have been using Effetre clear (06) as a base to avoid using up my color rods to make larger beads. That has crossed my mind since the ones that have cracked all have a clear base.

ETA: Several of them have cracked days after removing them from the mandrels.

Sheila, I do mix pretty indiscriminately Effetre, Vetrofond, CIM, & even some Lauscha & Reichenbach. Could promiscuous glass be the problem? Most of the time there is no problem; it's just recently that beads have been cracking. I've got one (encased in an Effetre pale tsp. green) in which the cracks grow wider daily, but the encasing stays intact. The cracks are at least 1mm in some spots. Kind of amazing, but I'm waiting for that one to explode any day.
