Default Hothead...Can it be used with proane?

I've updated my torch but it's gonna be awhile before I get it and....the worst part is the 2 companies that carry MAPP/Propeline gas are out! I'm stuck with no gas here and I've got orders to fill.
I was told that the hothead is a MAPP gas only kind of torch. IS this true? I have to empty bbq cylinders in the backyard for propane. Can I use propane and how much of a difference am I going to notice.
I'm desperate here!
Thanks
Irene

Irene... you can always use some of the 1 pound canisters to fill your orders. I'll check and see if they were able to catch it and over night the torch for you.

Yes, you can use your bbq tanks of propane. I do it all the time and so do several others. You probably won't notice a difference.

Thanks Brent..I'll live if it doesn't get here so no worries here on that. I appreciate what you've done...
Shawnette...I just called arrow springs and they are like NO do not use propane and then proceeded to give me this huge list of brazing fuels to use. But I know that I've even read in Cindy Jenkins' book or saw a picture and she was hooked to propane....so Now I'm like hmmmm....
But this is just for an emergency.....so I'm gonna go fill them up!
And pray lol

I use propane with my hothead & so does Nikki. I've got sheeps & florals & lizards of hers & they're just perfect so I figured if it worked so well for her, I sure as heck didn't see any reason not to try it for myself
(I've heard it's a bit cooler--but since I started that way, who knows?? shrug. hey, it's a "slow" torch anyway--but since I'm a slow melter, who cares? the price is sure as heck right!!!)

Propane is all I ever used with my hothead. A number of people have posted that they use propane and a number have posted "no never", mapp gas only You could try it, if you don't like it you'll be ready for a BBQ

Thanks....gonna have hubby fill up both tanks this tomorrow for me. We need some anyways. I can't use the 1lb canisters the way my husband set up the hh...He drilled a hole in my work area and it would be a pain to change it all around again and then by that time...my new torch will be here and all will be well!
It's amazing how panicky one gets when told that they may not be able to torch for a few days...Sounds to me like an "Addiction"!
ARRRGHHH I admit it.
I, Irene am a Torchahlolic!

I have a good friend (she's a lurker here) that has been using propane and a hot head for years and she makes awesome beads. She has used propane the entire time and has had no problem whatsoever.

how long does a bbq tank last (i'm assuming you mean one of those white squat tanks seen at all hardware stores) -- i'm buying propolene from a welding supply place far from my home and is heavy and very expensive -- this thread is fascinating to me!

thanks

I use a bbq tank of propone as well. I find the 9 kg (20-25ish pds) tank lasts me about three months on average. That's probably using it about 10 -15 hrs a week.

I am using bbq gas (propane) with a hothead. That and MAPP are what everyone I know who uses a hothead here uses. What's the problem? I haven't set myself on fire yet.
