Boro on a Minor? REALLY??
I have talked to a few people and they all say it can be done. I am on tanked oxy.
I bought a Northstar sample pack on an impulse, and some clip on boro glasses. I know I need a few more supplies like thicker mandrels and some clear boro, but before I spend more money can someone tell me if it is possible? Any tips or suggestions would be great.
Would anyone be willing to trade a few clear rods and mandrels for some enamels (also bought on impulse and more than I will ever use, tons of colors).
Thanks
Linda

It is definitely possible. Tanked oxy will crank a Minor farther than most people think it will go. It's not a super hot focused flame and it's definitely not the best torch for boro, but it'll work.

Until my lynx get here, I'm doing my creatures on a minor Every single one of them has been done on that little work-horse. If I can make a creature on one, I can't see why you wouldn't be able to make beads on one!! have fun!!!!

Yep I on occasion use boro on my minor too its a lil slower but it certainly works just fine! and with tanked oxy you will be oke doke! definately will want to use thicker than 1/16th mandrels but other than that you should be ok.

I have aways used my minor to do beads, and little sculptures in boro. I'm not quite sure why people think they will not be able to. I get my minor cranked and find it's great for beads. I'm on tanked oxygen so i'm not sure if that'll make a difference.

And as for thicker mandrels -- I know somebody who uses 1/16 mandrels with boro. She makes itty-bitty beads with itty-bitty boro murrini in them. She's just DARNED careful to keep the flame on the glass and off the mandrel. I do Open Torch sessions with her from time to time, and I can't remember ever hearing her mention burning through a mandrel. She's working on a Minor.
She's not making the murrini on the Minor. She builds them by bundling rods inside a section of copper tubing (don't ask me the diameter -- more than an inch, maybe 2 inches), heating them in a kiln, picking the heated glass up on a punty and getting it really hot in a Murphy fire bucket (which is a mini glory hole), then pulling it out into murrini cane.

It can be done on 1/16 but lol I just have always burned through them more often than not...im not so good at keeping it out of the flame but it would be easier on a minor because of the type of heat the minor has as opposed to the GTT.

Wow everyone, thanks for the encouragement. Pipyr I am now even more impressed with knowing you use a minor for your creatures. Now I guess I should buy some rods. I have a few 3/32 mandrels already. Another question now. In order to save the colored glass should I encase it over clear for even stringer or will it wash out the color.
Thanks everyone!!

I was wondering this same thing earlier today. What about a minor on two oxycons? Can you work boro that way? I have a line possibly on a reasonable5 lpm oxycon and already have one 5 lpm. If I hook them together, will this be enough oxy?

You need a few dozen (not because it's boro, just because you need a few dozen mandrels). The cheaper way is to get welding rod and cut them yourself. What you need to ask for is TIG (say "tig," not T-I-G) welding rod, 316L or 308L (316L is better, but 308L will do), 3/32 diameter. They're sold in 1-meter lengths by the pound. If you can open the box and get a look at the rods before you buy them, great. Welders don't care if the rods are straight, but obviously we do. [Warning: you may get looked at like you're an alien who just beamed in from the planet Zorg, or you may get the "little lady" treatment. Worst case scenario, you get both. Can you tell I've had more than my limit?] You can cut the rods with bolt cutters. There will be a bur anywhere you cut them that you'll need to grind or file, or the bead won't come off. I use a bench grinder, but people have been known to use anything abrasive including the concrete sidewalk.

Go right ahead and put it over a base of clear and then encase with clear if you want. Don't worry about washing out the color.

Hah funny you mention the little lady treatment. I finally got Cameron at my welding supply place trained. He is such a grumpy guy. BUT he knows better than to lock the tank shed every third Friday afternoon cuz he knows I am coming for a refill!! And he special ordered me some 1/16 rods, a whole lot more than I needed, so now he just throws in a few when I get my refill. I cant wait to see the expression on his face when I tell him I need some 3/16!! Dang nice looking man too, such a shame he is a grump.

squid you can absolutely do boro on a minor with 2 oxycons. Before I got my midrange I was using a minor with 2 oxycons and natural gas. and before I got my second oxycon i was doing boro on a minor with natural gas and one oxycon but I gotta admit that was a bit frustrating. slow but doable. The second oxycon makes all the difference in the world.

It was when I asked for 1/16 that I got the "planet Zorg" treatment. And you mean 3/32, not 3/16 -- why not phone him ahead of time if you think he'll have to order them for you? Or is the expression on his face worth the wait?

OOPS, yes I meant 3/32. And yes the expression is worth it. If I wasnt already married I would love to change his attitude LOL. I think it is all an act tho, cuz he has a cat that has run of the place. Maybe for mice, maybe because he's really a softy at heart. I do know I am his only regular female customer. Hmmm wonder if he is married.... (STOP IT LINDA!!!)
