Default Husband set a candle on kiln!

Yes, he did! He set a candle on top of my kiln! And before I noticed, it melted and dripped into some openings (vents or grates) on the top of the kiln. It's a blue Paragon. The wax did not drip inside the kiln (where the beads go) at all, but it got in those vents. My concern is...what if the wax catches on fire next time I use the kiln...will it? Can it?
And were do those openings lead to? What if it ruins the operation of the kiln? I'm afraid to use it. Will the wax eventually burn off?
Does anyone know?

I can't post an image of the kiln, but if you google "paragon kiln images", it's the first image that pops up. Just a blue square thing.

Thanks, Patti

oh wow, that is awful! Was he trying to be romantic??? Sorry about your kiln. I don't use Paragon kilns so I am not familiar enough with them to answer the question. I might think about calling a company rep though just to be on the safe side.

There's only 1 answer for this problem. Keeeeeel him! ... make it look like an accident... and use the life insurance $ to buy a new kiln.

Seriously though, I think Otter is on the right track about calling the company directly about this. Hope it's going to be okay!

Actually clean up as much wax off kiln and in nooks and crannies as you can and then take kiln outside and fire it up and burn out any remaining wax.....

Its not a disaster, just bit of a mess...... Kilns are used all the time in lost wax casting method (silver, brass, aluminum) and it burns out at fairly low temperatures but is a "smokey" process...... Once kiln stops smoking it will be ok.... But you may have some smoke smell next few time you fire it up. Keep ventilation going....

Silly rabbit!

I was thinking also that the wax would burn off. To avoid the whole catching on fire thing, I wonder if it would make sense to burn off the wax at a lower temperature.

Of course, calling Paragon is never a bad idea! They are always so helpful.

The controller being the electronic part for setting the rates and stuff? No, it does not appear to be in that area. Whew!
Thanks for the help everyone. The first night I used it there was a lovely scent throughout the house....Spring Meadow, I think.

I always keep a candle on top on my kiln - but is is too low to light and in a glass container. It just gives the garage a nice smell.

ok, I have a wax and kiln story too.

Also involves a husband.. hint.. NEVER let you husband in your studio.

I had a small box that contained a number of finished or almost finished heavily beaded items. Ine sead bead project I had about 300 hours in... hubby moved it off my packing table and put it on top of my kiln. and there was a block of bees wax in the box. It melted and made a huge glob of everything, may of the items were beaded onto leather.

I could have killed him dead.... but I diviorced him istead.. took a few more years, btu I am shed of the moron. New hubby wont even come in the shop door if he can help it. SMART man.

I use my small kiln for glass and lost wax (or at least I tried once). Just prop the door open a little and turn it on full until smoke stops coming out. You might hear a "wump wump wump" sound, but it is just a little bit of wax vapor burning.
