I believe you can use a lower coe in a higher coe because the higher coe exerts more surface tension so it holds in the lower. I just read about this in Jim Kervin's book on glass casting and kiln forming. It had a lot of information about compatibility and annealing. I think he wrote the book with Dan Fenton quite some years ago.

I guess I didn't really answer your question, but in the book I believe his point was that a lower coe will not hold a higher one but a higher one will hold a lower one. I think that is why you can't use 96 with bullseye. You can always try it anyway. I hope that helps.

You definitely can use a little 96 with Bullseye. I do all the time and have never had a problem. I accidentally made a 96 vine cane using a black BE thin stringer and after watching it for a month, nothing bad happened so I used it, no problems.

A lot of furnace can is not exactly 96 more like 92-96 and closer to BE than to 104.

That said, I would be more cautious about using 104 on 96. I think a little silver glass on a 96 base would probably be OK, or a twistie with Raku and silver on a 96 base, but do a little testing first.

Uh uh, no such thing as a stupid question. If you don't know, you ask and learn. NO SUCH THING as a stupid question about glass in my book.

I have never had success with using 104 on 96. They always crack. 96 on 104, no problem

Trey Cornette talks about using 104 on 96, and he doesn't recommend it, either.

You can do 96 raku on 104, but not 104 raku on 96. I think it has to do with the technical response you got in post #2 about the surface tension and Jim Kervin's book.

I would not recommend using 104 on 96.
