Default lights w/o tent?

So I'm of course trying to get better pics. I'm not sold on the tent deal, although it'd be nice for pendants with a lens b/c I get a lot of glare. But for beads, my natural light in my house with the sun at my back produces pretty good pics. But I know they could be better, so can someone tell me the diff between fluorescent and tungsten? A set up on bhg photo has the tunsten, but a smith victor set up has fluorescent, all with 5000K heat, both with reflectors. I'm afraid my camera won't work with the tent, so can I use the lights just on the table with no diffuser? I don't want to have to get a new camera, and I dont want to wait for the right time of day to take the pic! Thanks for any advice!!
