One of my favorite book is the Tonbo-Dama (Japanese Glass Beads)

Now We can have the Tonbo-Dama2
It is only in Japanese but the first book have so many pictures that I think it is possible to understand the technique.

That looks a lot like boro on a lynx, but it seems weird that a tonbo-dama book wouldn't be using satake.

I found the first book's translations to be so minimal that I didn't even really use them...well maybe a little, but in general the pictures are detailed enough that you can get the idea without needing translations. Although, if there is a section using boro I would probably need a little help since my experience in using boro is fairly limited. I want a copy too!

Yup, I'll let you know. I *think* the books are on the way ...

(some of the emails I get from Japan are a little ... cryptic ... )

Me too. The English was a bit...interesting. As you said though, the pictures were all that was needed.

Oh Crap !

I just had a friend in Japan order me one so she can bring it to me in a few weeks. It didn't occur to me anyone here would jump on a book like that, I'd rather have given Malcolm the money . The techniques must be more popular than I realized!

I've just received my first shipment of this book! Here's my initial review:
Quote:
Tonbo-Dama 2

First Edition
Copyright 2010
Hard Cover
112 pages

The latest in the Japanese series of glassworking books. This book covers lampworking using both ultra-soft glass and boro. Prior books in this series include the original Tonbo-Dama book (lampworking (mostly beads) using the ultra-soft glass), Boro lampworking, and kiln casting.

The book has 4 'chapters':

* The first chapter cover the basic techniques of lampworking with the ultra-soft glass on one of the Japanese "air burning" torches.

* The second chapter cover the basic techniques of lampworking borosilicate glass with an oxy/fuel torch.

* The third 'chapter' is broken up into six sections, each one examining the work of an individual artist:

1) Masaaki Nakano demonstrates how to make a fish murrini, and beads using gold and silver leaf. (ultra-soft glass)

2) Ryo Ono demonstrates bead making using gold and silver leaf, and assembly techniques. (ultra-soft glass)

3) Yuko Shiba demonstrates how to assemble finished jewelry using wire techniques wrapping and making chain mail.

4) Yoshio Omura demonstrates making pendants and beads. (boro)

5) Hiromi Baltazar demonstrates bead stringing.

6) Akihiro Okama demonstrates making pendants using dichroic glass. (boro)

* The last 'chapter' cover the making of glass rings on a large mandrel, and pendants, all using the ultra-soft glass.

The book is completely in Japanese; there are no English sub-titles! The photography, layout, and work is beautiful, and an experienced artist should be able to follow along just by the pictures. I was able to pick up a couple of tricks and new techniques with just a quick skim through the book.

I would recommend this book to:

* artists who have read or watched the original Tonbo-Dama book or DVD, or
* artists that have prior experience working with these materials, or
* artists that are fluent in Japanese.
My price is $45, plus shipping.

Malcolm
