Glass Enamel vs Metal Enamel
I'm a bit confused about the enamels - I bought some enamels from Barbara Lewis during a class from her. We were using it on metal beads, but she did not specify what type she was using.
Can I use the same enamel on Glass beads, or does it have to be a different type of enamel?

You'll probably want to use enamels made for soft glass. Thompson's makes them. I've been told that enamels designed for metals don't play so nicely with glass, though I can't confirm or deny at the moment.

The CoEs are radically different. Metal enamels have a cubic expansion range of 258-360.

I agree with Elizabeth. In fact even the line of Enamels made for glass have a wide range of COEs with in them. Metal Enamels won't work for glass.

For Thompson enamels:
Series 1000/2000 COE 258-360
Copper, gold, silver, low carbon steel, metal clay
Series 5000/6000 COE 80
Window (float) glass, magnetic stainless steel
Series 7000/8000 COE 90-96
Stained glass, hot glass blowing, Bullseye, Spectrum
Series 9000 COE 104

Thanks for all the info  I did go on her website, and her enamels are in the 1000 range, so they are just for metal. Thanks so much for the info!!

You can get a sampler kit from thompson for the 9000 series, a little bit goes a really long way for the enamels!

I'm just wondering if anyone has been playing with the metal enamels. My glass set has barely been breached, but I'm really curious about the metal ones too.

I do a bit of metal enameling. Do you want to do torch fired or kiln fired? I'm a bit more familiar with kiln firing, but am not real experienced in either. I love the look though. There is a very knowledgable member here - Karin?

Torch, I have a Chili Pepper, and I don't think that is very good for kiln firing. I saw a demo of each a couple of years ago at a glass party, and I'm pretty sure I realized I would need a different kiln.

No, I don't have any pics. Do you have the torch fired enamels book? Everybody says it is great. By Barbara Lewis. I think torch firing produces more firescale than kiln firing though.
