Default Inherited Sony cybershot dsc s40

I've inherited my father's camera (he recently passed) and I have no instructions with it. I did a search on the internet and found some instructions but either I'm an idiot or they are poorly written and missing some things. I am having trouble getting in real close. The camera only goes so far in the zoom and then blinks and shuts off. I do see something that says Precision or Smart under the Digital Zoom menu. It was on Smart, I have not tried it on Precision. Does anyone know what that does? Or can you give me any tips on the best way to set this camera for optimal pictures of my beads? I do have a tent and some good lights. I just would like some consistent, bright, clear photos and I think this camera can do it. The photos I saw my dad take with it (although usually not close-ups) were beautiful, better than my Nikon coolpix 4300 (unless I just don't know how to use that one). Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks so much for your time.

it's on the sony site in the support archives: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/mod....pl?mdl=DSCS40

there are a couple good reviews here that walk you through the camera features: http://www.google.com/search?q=Sony+...x=&startPage=1
