Default Making a Dichroic Glass Strip Tutorial - Shawn Tucker - Oregon Made Functional Glass

Just a little mini tutorial on how to back a piece of dichroic sheet glass with a dark background to protect it from the flame and keep it from scumming/burning.

Shawn uses 33COE but this technique works for any COE and is perfect for both flameworking and fusing.

Shawn will be using this dichroic strip in a later tutorial in which he makes a jellyfish marble with fuming latticino and a dichro backing.

That was good, and I am going to try pulling like that too. He makes it look easy, but I'm sure I will have some duds at first

This is how I make dichro twisted canes! Once you have the dichro backed (with clear or any color), curl up the backing glass so it covers the edges, then you can work it into any complex cane you can imagine. My latest favorite is using a dark opaque as the backing color, then heating the back of the backing and laying on another color of dichro (heat & press slowly to avoid trapping air). Stripe both sides of your "sandwich" then encase the whole thing with clear or a light transparent. Heat up the mass slowly, then pull & twist. Tada, twisted dichro ribbon!
