Emiko big hole mandrels
Hi everyone! What are the most popular sizes for these mandrels? I'd like to start to add (or try to) rings to my repetoire.
Thanks
Duane

Hi Duane,
The sizes I use, and approximate corresponding ring size are:
5/8" (size 5)
11/16" (size 7)
3/4" (size 9)
13/16" (size 11)
depending on how thick the bead release is, I end up with a fairly good range of sizes.
You might know this already, but these mandrels are fairly big heat sinks. I make sure they are well heated before I start to wind on the glass (otherwise it will just pop off).
Hope this is helpful.

I don't know much about these mandrels, but I had some custom made that are 5/8" (size 5) and 3/4" (size 9). They seem to meet my needs for most rings. I probably should make some 11/16" ones too.
I got 1/4" steel from SpeedyMetals cut to 9" lengths (for the handles). Then I ordered 2" lengths of the 2 widths. The metal cost me under $30 shipped for 6 finished ring mandrels. I had a local welder tack-weld the pieces to the handles for me.

Duane - I'm sure you are the only one that thinks your beads are dreadful. Are you going to make the rings in boro? I've made rings in soft glass and they tend to break easily. At least the ones I made did. I didn't make them really thick so that might have attributed to the breakage.
Sorry can't help with the sizes...

Me, boro?? I keep a small supply of boro rods on the far left side of my table just so I can counter-balance my soft glass......
seriously though, I was thinking of trying them in soft glass first. After that, we'll see

I find that even with trying to vary the bead release thickness I'm not great at really getting a full range of sizes from the standard ring mandrels. I recently took a look at how well I was doing at getting intermediate sizes in this blog post...

I got some intermediate sized mandrels from Noodlesaurus and it does seem to help me fill out the size range.
But I'm still experimenting with different bead releases.

You might keep an eye on the garage sale section here. I see them for sale every now and again. The trick to not getting spinners is to be careful not to add torque as you apply your glass. For bead release I would recommend 1/2 Fusion and 1/2 FosterFire either heavy Duty or Smooth & Tuff. I sell 2 oz. sample sizes if that helps.
