Oh...okie! Well, it sure is beautiful, and it's just as well it's boro - or I'd be cryin' in me soup, since you'll be hanging on to it all! Thanks for showing it, though - it's very inspirational...

ohh and the difference between those two pulls is mine has about 60 hc cells and less clear on the outside and chayes has about 30 with more clear on the outside.

i think the more cells the more it looks like a true honeycomb.

ill try to get some pics with it next week made into something...its the weekend.

they are 33 coe(even chayes's)

i don't wanna step on any toes.....but here goes

heavilly fume a clear 16 mm rod (4 in or so), sleeve with clear tubing(32x4), and remove air. melt and pull to 7 mm, score, then stack them, then melt them together and pull to desired size

good luck, hope that helps......

Oh, thanks PJ for your take on this - from me at least!

Of course, this means a number of things to me:

* I totally CAN'T do this...! Boro and my Hot Head speak different languages.
* I further CAN'T do this (at least as described) 'cuz Fuming (I don't think) can be done on a HH.
* I don't know for sure, but from what you're describing, the "sleeving" of the fumed rod would leave even the smallest encasing of clear around the fumed rod and I don't see any clear between the "combs". So, obviously I'm missing something (besides the obvious few "loose screws" ) and there's gotta be more to this mystery than meets the eye!
* The "combs" themselves look to have a "hex" shape. How's THAT accomplished if your fumed rod is round?

I'm still conjuring ideas of how I might try this in soft glass. It would probably be a totally different method than what's been described, but I'm a determined, hard-headed crazy woman, don't 'cha know! If I have success, I'll be sure to post!

Keep those suggestions coming...if "oldschool" doesn't mind, that is!

De

You can do it in soft glass any color. The Japanese do it all the time, and a hothead has more power than their air torches.

Here's a shot of a page from the book tonbo-dama. There are a few pages of instructions, but this should give it away.

Basically, cut a pile of pieces (probably clear encased in opaque) and bundle them together with wire. Preheat the massive block of glass, punty on, melt out the air, pull. Fuming doesn't work so well in soft glass so I'd just stick with a yellow or something.

The same technique works well for flower murrini.

If you use very thin cane as a starting point (like 2-3mm) you might not even need to preheat.

Use a hexagonal number to get the proper shape (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centered_hexagonal_number).
