Default Ancient Glass Bead Questions

I'm doing research on ancient beads, and I have questions about how some of the beads were made, so I'll use this thread for those questions.

Does this look like a frit bead or a melted-in-dot bead to you?

Does i look like the chevrons were made by raking or by laying stringer down in a chevron pattern?

Aimee, here are a couple of links to groups of bead scholars and experts who can help you answer your questions:

The Society of Bead Researchers: http://www.beadresearch.org

The Beadsite (this site is not active, but an archive of Peter Francis Jr.): http://www.thebeadsite.com

I would also google "Islamic folded beads" and "End of Day beads"

The 1st bead I'd say it was pressed/rolled in frit and the 2nd I'd say it was made laying down right twist then left twist stringers side by side. I don't think the 2nd is a folded bead.

Whoops, yep, should be "Islamic combed beads" (teach me to type in a hurry!) search not folded although the same set would come up. The other key word search would be "Islamic trailed beads". The bottom looks like a combed bead.

The top bead looks to be what is called an impressed crumb bead, sometimes called and end of day bead. It is made like a modern frit bead.

Some other good references are Jamey Allen's Magical Ancient Beads, Dr. Robert K Liu's Collectible Beads, and Lois Dubin's The History of Beads.
