Am I the only one who uses my phone (S4)? Mostly because I don't have a proper lighting setup yet anyways. I just wait till nightfall so there isn't a lot of ambient light casting weird reflections, find a spot I think is suitably flattering and take a couple snapshots. Then I use an app (Pixlr Express) to crop, sharpen and share on FB.
One of these days I guess maybe I should borrow my mother's $1500 camera and see how that works out for me.

No, I do mine on my phone too! Its the reason I upgraded to the 5G. And - as you point out - after cropping and, other editing they are good enough for the interwebs.

I have been using my phone (Samsung S3), but I do find it is a PITA to resize to be uploaded. I don't know if there is a setting on the camera function to take smaller resolution pix or not. I think we are going to upgrade to a S5 in a month or two, so I don't know if it's worth trying to figure out either.
