Airmiles for this choice of camers
DH's airmiles are expiring, and we can't afford to fly anywhere and pay for all the extras...so he said he'd like to get me a camera that will do better macros than my point-n-shoot. Here are the types offered:
Nikon D3000
Olympus SP-590
Nikon coolpix 570
Casio EX-FH20
Nikon Coolpix P90
I've trawled through here for any reviews, but all the models I've found have been a few letters or numbers off.
Has anyone had any experience with these?
Manythanksindeed

The Nikon D3000 is a great camera.

Id say the D3000 is the best bang for your buck...Does it come with a lense too? or just the body of the camera...?

I saw a lot of rave reviews about the D5000 Here's the blurb on lenses:
"Additional features include a 3x 18-55mm Zoom-NIKKOR VR Image Stabilization Lens"
I guess it doesn't come with extras.... so do I need a macro lense too? I read that I could get away without it, with proper set-up.

If you don't want to invest in a macro lens right now, buy a set of close up lenses. They're far less expensive (I think I paid $60 for a set of 3).

If the airmiles offer department store vouchers you may be able to get the vouchers for "less" points, and the camera of your choice without being limited by those offered by the program.

Thanks for the tip on lenses. I have never touched an SLR....exciting!
Wendy- thanks for the idea. DH already ordered the D3000. Dagnabit. But I think I'm liking it more and more
Now I need to make more beads to photograph... when it comes.

The standard lens will probably be more than adequate.
If you need to get closer, the closeup lens adapters that Felicia mentioned will be an inexpensive solution (much less so than a dedicated macro lens). These just screw on to the front of the standard lens. If you do get some, make sure that they fit your lens. Camera lenses come in many different diameters, and you will need to get the closeup adapters that fit your lens.
The camera is only one small part of getting good photos of your beads. Lighting is probably more important than the camera. Be prepared to spend some time learning how to take good photos. There is a tutorial available specifically on how to photograph beads:
http://www.betterbeadshots.com/
From what I have seen, the tutorial seems to be quite good. I have no affiliation with this person in any way.
