Question about etching
I have noticed that some of the etching liquid leaves a slight white spot in places and even after scrubbing with a toothbrush. What does everyone use to remove the residue from their beads?

While etching you need to be sure that the beads roll around to get an even exposure to the acid. After etching you need to soak the beads in an alkaline agent to completely neutralize the acid. Some small amounts may remain in the surface layer of the glass and it needs to be neutralized. Washing with water and scrubbing is insufficient. I recommend using Washing Soda - you can get it in the detergent aisle in the grocery store for about a buck. soak for 5-10 minutes, stirring the beads around occasionally, then rinse thoroughly.

You can also rub the bead with Renaissance wax to seal it and it will remove any remaining white spots.

Renaissance wax doesn't neutralize the residual hydrofluoric acid that may remain after etching and water washing. Complete neutralization by an alkali is necessary. HF ain't no joke, it is a nasty compound and needs to be taken very seriously. Soaking in washing soda will do this, then treat the surface with whatever you like. Otherwise the surface will continue to slowly degrade over time and the splotches will come back.

Robert, does baking soda work the same way as washing soda to neutralize the acid?

Baking soda will work but not as effectively so you'll need to soak longer. Washing soda really is cheap and easy to get - I keep a box of in my studio just to use for etching neutralization.

Robert, can you give me a brand name for the washing soda?

Arm and Hammer makes it, that's the brand that I use. I also keep my etching liquid in a freezer bag to control outgassing.

Just put a bottle in a cabinet with some clear tumblers and see what happens
