Default Boro Flame workshop Dear Kristen,

Hi folks,

"The creature and the cage’ is the title chosen for a borosilicate flame-workshop jointly run by Mark Eliott and Peter Minson after the Sydney Ausglass conference in January. Mark has taught many flame-workshops and Peter has probably taught more than anyone else in Australia.

Mark has been planning this workshop in consultation with Peter around the theme of balancing freedom and tradition in borosilicate flame-work.

The ‘creature and the Cage’ serves as a metaphor for the creative improvisational spirit working within the structure of the flame-work tradition. Rather than regarding this tradition - with its various approaches (scientific glass, novelty glass, bead making etc) as a cage which fosters technique but at the expense of creativity, we can see it as a ‘home base’ which allows us to launch from a position of strength into fresh territory such as conceptual work, hybrid art, performance and mixed media.

During this intensive 5 day workshop students will improvise and collaborate while learning many practical flame-work skills such as planning, blowing vessels, solid sculpting, figurine making and use of colour. Peter and Mark will be collaborating for the first time since he was Marks teacher many years ago and each will bring his differing skills and approaches to the workshop. Mark has recently been focusing on improvisation. Peter has always taught students with the aim of providing the technical skills needed to bring their own ideas to fruition.

Prior flame-work experience is useful but not essential as they can cater to a variety of different skill levels. They will also take you on a walk on the beautiful grounds of Sydney College of the arts and show a PowerPoint with discussion of various examples of flame-work which extend the tradition.

The workshop will run from 25th to 29th 5 Days in total from 9-5pm and cost $1320 (GST inc) however conference attendees will receive a $145 discount.

If you’re interested please log onto ausglass.org.au for details.

If you have any questions you can also contact Mark (mark@markeliottglass.com phone 0411 76743 or Peter on peter@minsonartglass.com.au phone 0262 274312)

PS Peter and Mark will also be speaking separately at the Ausglass conference which runs from January 21st to 23rd and promises to be an exciting event with opportunities to connect with the diverse range of people and approaches in the current Australian glass scene as well as international presenters.
