? Biggest Torch for only one Oxycon?
Hi,
I have a Minor Burner and one oxygen concentrator which is a 5ml DeVilbiss Solaris V.
Just realized today that I've been using this same torch for over five years and would like bigger and better!
1. Do I need to get a second oxycon to move bigger?
2. What torch, if any are bigger that run on only one Oxycon?
Thanks,
Ilene

You are not going to get 'great' performance out of one 5 LMP machine. The Cricket is a very efficient torch and will run well on one machine. However, it really comes to life with two 5 LPM machines.
Some are moving to the Scorpion which has the Cricket as the inner fire. But one 5 LPM machine would not run the outer and inner at the same time. Some are running the inner with two 5 LPM machines and using tanked for the outer with a foot peddle on the four stud model.
The bottom line, if you need more power/heat then there is the need for more oxygen.

The minor will work much better on 2 5lpm oxycons. I couldn't cope with only one oxycon and used 2. However, when I moved up to a midrange I went to an Airsep 8lpm oxycon and am now looking into the Scorpion.

A lynx will get the most heat out of it.

Instead of upgrading your torch which won't work on a 5lpm well anyway, get another oxycon and you can really tell the difference on your Minor.

Yeah, I agree... get another oxy con, then a lynx.

FWIW, I used a lynx with a 10 LPM oxycon and (invacare) and it was lacking big time compared to tanked. Why not get a torch specifically built for a 10 lpm oxycon and another 5 lpm machine...Scorpion.
If you are using soft glass only...okay, a Lynx and 10 lpm is OK, but if you move to boro, it will be under powered with a 10 lpm oxycon.

all torches will have EXACTALY the same amount of heat output from a 5 l/min concentrator which will be less than 7000 BTU/Hour.

that's not true - my cricket is way hotter than my minor on a single oxycon.

DOG is my co-pilot
Cricket w/two 5 lpm oxycons - and sometimes a Minor.

If you were working with a chemical equation (x amount of oxygen mixed with y amount of fuel gives you z amount of heat output), then, yeah. BUT... torches are not 100% efficient and the heat that is produced is not always directed into the flame. With some torches, a great deal of the heat is lost to the atmosphere surrounding the flame and back onto the torch body, itself.

If you are talking about the BTU number only, you may be correct. But the usable heat will vary greatly from torch to torch. I can take a Minor and hook it up to a single concentrator and get a decent flame. I can hook a CC up to that concentrator and while the same gas and oxygen are flowing through the torch, the flame won't be nearly as usable on the CC as it is on the Minor.

the quote i was responding to said "heat". and heat is BTU/hour. people get heat and temperature all messed up. you can have a small very high temperature flame, or s much larger but not so hot flame, and then can contain the same amount of heat. but much different glass working properties.

True, but I don't think the OP was asking a chemistry question. And, I don't think dusty meant "heat" in the scholastic sense of the word. You know as well as I do, when someone on here talks about a torch having "heat" or a "hot flame", they are talking about a usable flame, not how many BTUs it puts out.

Mark, you remind me of a quote from the Dune series about specialists.
"Above all else, the mentat must be a generalist, not a specialist. It is wise to have decisions of great moment monitored by generalists. Experts and specialists lead you quickly into chaos. They are a source of useless nit-picking, the ferocious quibble over a comma."
No offense meant - I appreciate your specialist knowledge.

So, hopefully to answer your questions and put everything together:
1. Do I need to get a second oxycon to move bigger? Yes, I honestly believe if you want to move bigger you need a second oxycon. However, there are people who use a Lynx on only one oxycon, but a lot will depend on how you want to work.
2. What torch, if any are bigger that run on only one Oxycon? I don't believe that there is a larger torch that will run great on only one oxycon. I believe to have a bigger flame than your Minor you will need the second oxygen concentrator.
Adding general information, the Cricket was designed to run on oxygen concentrators and would more than likely give you a more useable flame than the Minor, which was not designed to run on one concentrator, but I don't believe the flame is larger, just more focused and therefore able to really concentrate the heat. The Scorpion will give you a much larger flame and was designed to run on oxygen concentrators, so if you want to have a larger flame and buy an additional oxycon, then I believe you will get a larger flame with this torch. It will also give you the versatility of being able to work with the smaller flame of the centerfire, and have a larger flame to use for additional workable flame. Both these torches were designed to be used with concentrators and will, in my opinion, give you better working conditions for the amount of oxygen used.
