Kilns and cinderblock question
Hello all,
I just got a new Jenken kiln w/ a bead door. I think it can sit on the garage floor on the stand provided, but it's a bit too low for me. I heard you can set them up on cinderblocks, but would like to see a photo of what direction the cinderblocks should face.
the book says down, I think that means the wholes should be facing out ( so heat can escape), my husband thinks "down" means the wholes should be towards the floor.
Any help or photos on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Cathy

I used to have a Jen-Ken and I had mine on a steel cart and on top of that I had it on 3 bricks (in a triangle pattern). Don't have any pics though as I have a different kiln now.
Good luck!

My Jen Ken came with 3 fire bricks. The firebricks do not have holes and are sitting with the narrow side going up and down, they are set up on a metal cabinet in a trianglr formation and the kiln sits on the firebricks.... been like that for 4 years
Since you have cinderblocks, I would call Jen Ken and just ask them (keep your warranty valid and all of that)....

What ever works....... Since kiln weighs a lot less than load rating of the "cinderblocks" the orientation is really moot......

Just for the sake of safety you probably would want them in whatever the strongest position is for them. If they're the type that have the two large holes in them, that would be so that those holes point up and down.
Having said that, since there are precious few people in my studio besides me, I have mine set up on three cinder blocks standing upright (tallest position) and I have them laid out so they look like an astrisk missing several legs *

Thanks Dale - I think it will be okay. I just thought I had read somewhere that if you have the holes in the cinderblock facing the ground that it would be too much heat for the floor, better to turn sideways. But I think I can follow your advice about "load". the kiln feels stable as is.
Thanks again,
Cathy

thanks so much - I appreciate all the feedback. How did you like you JenKen when you had it?

Interesting. You know, when I was reading and shopping online for kilns, I had seen numerous photos about how to set it on cinderblocks to increase comfortable height, --now that I have it, do you think I could find one of those photos!?! - of course not.
Well, thank you - I have mine tall as well - in an out of the way place in the garage where there is no traffic, so I don't think it will be a problem. My husband was concerned about the strength with the heat and whether that would diminish the strength.
I'm going to run it a few times and see how hot the block gets.
Again,
Thanks

Great advice. I'll give JenKen a call just to make sure.
Thanks,
