its just a glass rod. he melted a glob and then smooshed it into a paddle. probably boro.

It's brilliant. The "boro" tool acts as a magnifying lense and you can see how much you are smooshing the murrinni as you do it.

That's pretty darn brilliant, a see-through paddle for murrini. I think I neeeed to make some of those.

remember the japanese glass is much softer and melts at an even lower temp than 104. so.. 104 may stick while the japanese doesnt.. havent tried it,, but its a possibility...

I sent an email, but I'm guessing those paddles are fused quartz rod.
Maybe borosilicate, but fused quartz is much tougher and harder to melt.

Well now I know what "tool" I'm making next time on the torch--LOVE THIS!!
Thanks for sharing! (and I love not having to know Japanese--this translate well!)

It would be interesting to hear from someone who can translate the guys instruction...
fused quartz, that has got to be the stuff to use for making gold/silver fuming sticks? When I made mine I asked the local glass shop, they never hear of it and gave me boro, that melts....where can I get this, preferably in Europe?

flower drawing rod
I also wonder if someone has found an instruction somewhere beside the Tonbo-dama DVD about how to use the japanese flower drawing rods, the ones with metal balls on the ends.
I found a vague describtion, but would really like to SEE....
I can't find the japanese translation for the name of this tool, so searching is difficult!

Mountain Glass Arts lists quartz rod. Their description says it is perfect for a fuming rod. I don't recall seeing anywhere else.

I have no idea where to buy it in Europe but it is pretty common, Wale, MGA,
and ABR have it here in the states along with numerous scientific glass
suppliers.
A google search for "fused quartz rod" will probably produce some local results.
Fused quartz has a COE of 0 (yes 0), a regular O2/fuel torch will not get it hot
enough to work, you can melt it white hot and stick it into ice water and it will
not fracture, fun stuff.

So how do we make the paddle on the end if we can't get it hot enough to work? Will my husband's welding torch work?

Got a response from someone able to translate.
He does not specify what glass is used but from what he says it would seem
they are soft glass.
"During the video, he says to not use the paddles in the flame, I would assume
they would melt and deform, so they too must be made of soft glass.
What he does say about them is that they are lenses. By using one of them, he
can form the bead that he puts on top of the glass flower such that it will look
magnified."

You can probably get it hot enough to mash a paddle with a welding torch.
It is normally worked in a Hydrogen/Oxygen flame that gets very hot.

I have some clear boro rods that I use for punties. I'll have to try this today. I'll post if it works or not.

Interesting!
I made a boro paddle and used it on my 104 glass. Ok to use once or twice, then it gets too hot and the murrini sticks. Needless to say, you need to be very, very careful that the murrini is not to hot, it mustn't glow.
For the not so patient person, like me, quartz glass would be best. I have searched and can't find it in Europe, unless I want huge amounts.
What is MGA and ABR?
As for melting quartz glass, it has a melting temperature beyond 2000 C, and is normally worked with a hydrogen fused torch. Something that goldsmiths making platinum jewelry uses, so check out the local goldsmiths, offer them some cake for the coffebreak and ask for help on mashing the end...
As the glass is so hot when it is to be mashed, I don't know if our normal mashers of steel or brass will work, but the goldsmith will know. Maybe you have to use graphite.
The lens thing is interesting - you can buy quartz glass watch lenses on ebay, what if it was possible to "weld" a rod onto one of those?

I melted a large boro rod that I have into a lens on the end but I have not tried it yet. I have some quartz (about 1cm diameter) that I use for fuming. I can't imagine being patient enough to actually melt the stuff.

I have melted quartz in a really really raging hot high oxy flame. but it is extremely bright and you need very dark lenses, like dark welders shades to mess with the stuff.... be careful.. it also puts off a quartz vapor that is not a good idea to breathe.... not for your average hobby person, to get it to the flow stage.... be careful

I use 6mm quartz rod to fume with. I had just a little trouble melting it with a welding torch. It is very very bright and very stiff. Zero COE...very interesting!
