Default Opening Lampworking Studio in NYC...

Does anyone know the best way to go about opening a lampworking studio in Brooklyn, NY? The fire department is giving me the runaround on the phone when I ask about fire codes. Where do I start? Thank you! Peace...

check with Urban Glass they are in NYC and they have lampwork facilties in their shop they may be able to help you get around what you need to deal with and get around or make stuff up to code.

I think the biggest issues out there is they want all fuels and accelerants such as oxygen in secured seperate housing and you will have to have a liccensed plumber run your lines for you with taps and turn off valves / gauges for each station. Ventilation and fireproofing will also be another big thing. They dont want any potential new business being the cause of a huge fire or loss for others so they tend to be a bit cautionary and understandably so.

You won't be allowed to use Propane in Brooklyn. If you don't know the fire codes I'd hire a consultant or a designer to help you. The fire dept's expect you to know them.
