Question What to Bring to Glass Stock and who's going??

Lea requested a thread for what to bring to Glass Stock besides the things already listed (i.e. jammies, hat, beads for dealers). And someone else asked for a listing of who's going (obviously this is voluntary if you want to add your name so your friends will know).

So - here it is and I hope those who've been there before will chime in. Karen has been wonderful on the "dreaded demo" thread. Surely there are others who could add to this.

One thing I would like to add - just because I pm'd Karen to ask about it. There is evidently a raffle which hasn't been talked about much. A silent auction sort of thing. This is were you can bring anything you think someone else would like and it doesn't have to be glass related. it's a fund raising sort of thing, voluntary I believe, but helps with expenses and I, for one, think that anything we can do to keep this going is great!!

Sounds like lunch and something to keep it cool should be added to the list this year.

I have a couple "what to bring" related questions that I'm hoping one of you returners can answer...

How far is the parking lot from the facility and is it a smooth surface (I'm wondering about bringing a bag with wheels to tote tools and lunch in or maybe a cooler with wheels for lunches and water)?

Should we plan on bringing enough cold water for the whole day or is there somewhere handy for refills?

Parking is fairly close to the event building and it is paved, it is a little "ridgy" but you should be fine. If you stay the La Quinta, you could keep your food in your hotel fridge and walk back for lunch.

Okay, Here's how this is going to work

I'm starting this list.
If you have something to add to it, copy MY list, ADD your item(s) to
the BOTTOM, and post it. Then the next person who adds to the list
copies THAT list, and adds their items to the bottom - and so on.
Clear as mud? By the time this is finished, we should have a complete list
on the last post. Note: I'm NOT adding stuff like "snacks", since there are
plenty of local stores you can buy snacks at. This is a "bring from home" list.

Here goes:

1. Clothing
2. Didy or boro glasses
3. Tools for classes (see list of classes for the tools you need)
4. Pills/vitamins
5. pajamas for pajama jam
6. Trade beads (I bring about 60)
7. Vendor gifts (2 beads usually)
8. Gift item for auction
9. Money for auction (checkbook/cash)
10. Closed toed shoes
11. notarized letter
12. cell phone AND charger
13. bathing suit (for hotel pool/jacuzzi)
14. refillable water bottle
15. mask for classes using frit
16. light jacket (it can get chilly)
17. address book to get info from new friends
18. notebook and pens
19. directions to event
20. Extra suitcase for purchases (no, I am NOT kidding about this one.
Usually, I throw a zipper duffel bag in, and my clothes go in there on the
return journey, leaving my suitcase free for purchases AND the stuff I make
during the event. You'll be surprised how much room this stuff takes up).
21. Glass rod storage travel container (these are AWESOME) Here's some links to tubes that can work:

http://www.artcoinc.com/storage_and_travel_tubes.php
http://www.fineartbyrocio.com/tools.html
22. spray bottle of lysol (used for spraying surfaces and fixtures in your hotel
room/condo. It sucks to catch a cold from the last guest. Learned this trick
from a world traveler friend of mine).
23. Basic first aid kit. Burn cream, band aids, something to help you sleep,
allergy meds, flu meds (in case), cough meds, headache meds, lavender oil.
24. Makeup, shampoo, toiletry stuff
25. camera
26.
27.
28.

Thanks, guys.

Teague, I'm sharing a rental house with 8 of my closest strangers. It's a couple of miles away.

If there is something that you are "LOST" without, be it a marver, your armrests, lucky teddy bear, a donut cushion to sit on so your butt doesn't hurt
from sitting for 8 hours at a stretch - BRING IT!!! Absolutely! There might be
marvers, and there might NOT be. Could vary from torch to torch, so if you
NEED it, bring it!

you guys (oops - gals) are awesome!!

Already you've listed things I wouldn't have thought of - like my checkbook, I don't usually travel w/it, just use CC's, but can see it would be needed there.

Thanks to you both for beginning our list - only now I think I'm going to be owing the Airlines more money for suitcases (LOL)

Oh TRUUUUUUST me on this one. You WANT to bring along a small second
suitcase or bag to toss your clothes into. Because looking for one at 11pm
the night before your morning flight is a REALLY SUCKY THING to be doing!
I came really close to using duct tape to secure my tools and glass rods
around my waist for the trip home, like some sort of crazy glass bomber.

Ohhhh, it was uuuuugly.....

Also, this one should be obvious, but never seems to be.

Do NOT pack your beads/jewelry/findings in your luggage.
Tools seem to fare ok, but we had LOTS of people with horror
stories about their swap beads coming up missing on the flight
home. Put em in your carry on bags.

Oh Karen,
I've been laughing ever since reading your post about taping stuff to yourself for the flight home. What a mental picture that gives me

I cannot wait to meet you in person!! But until then I'll keep picturing you with a mandrel strapped to one hip and a marble mold to the other - and rods of glass sticking out everywhere!!!

(pasted from the main GS thread)

Like Deb and Patty said - it cannot be emphasized enough - LABEL ALL YOUR
TOOLS. You're going to be sitting at a table with 15 other people who ALL
HAVE THE SAME TOOLS AS YOU DO. Mix-ups are inevitable, and the only thing
between you and your marver is a sharpie. I like the silver sharpie for labeling
the black tools! Looks great and really stands out.

Like our dentist says "only brush the teeth you want to keep", our version is
"Only label the tools you want to keep" .

I have a question - how do you mark your "trade beads"?? If we need to bring a bunch I would think we need to mark them somehow but want it to be easy.
Thanks,

Make sure the box that you keep them in has your name on it somewhere.
Maybe keep them loose until you trade then put them in a baggie with your card.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of bringing baggies - another thing to add to the list. I really appreciate all this info. I hope others are paying attention too.

Lol, yep, the boro boys will be busy, I do have a couple surprise hunks we could designate as "brow wipers" to keep us ladies fresh, lol! Who likes a sweaty brow?

Yes, Lori, the torches will all have marvers...I love my "Crowley" marver, of course we will have those! But bring whatever you feel like carrying around, some gals even bring their sheilds but MARK everything like Karen says....please!

I will have lots of small zippy bags just large enough for business cards and beads, so we can furnish those for sponsor donations (we ask for 2 when you sign up, bags and markers will be at tables, then they are divided among the almost 30 sponsors we have).

I am headed to teach at EGS this weekend for 3 days, then off to see my Dad on Fathers Day night and next day. Will be back home Tuesday and then have a student 3 days so I sure appreciate Karen, Patty, Felicia, Melody and everyone else that has helped answer questions for all of you!
So here is a huge thank you to all of you!!!
Hugs deb

Did everyone get their letter from Deb?? Makes it seem closer, doesn't it
Of course she did mention that dreaded "demo" part, but we've over that and we know we'll get through it. Now I'm trying to think of how to decorate a hat and what to do about pj's!!

Can hardly wait to see and meet everyone, and have so much fun - it's like summer camp for adults (or maybe I'm just in my second childhood )

It's coming, it's coming!

I'm far more bothered by the hat than the demo. I hate wearing hats, so it's beyond me to figure out what to do with one. That said, I really do need to decide on a demo.

Melody, you are so cute! No worries about the hat or PJ's unless you WANT to play Great prizes though!

Ah, yeah, the demo.....did you like the part about us "picking a demo for you"? LOL! Seriously, we have been known to do that!
You MUST have your demo info to Doretha BY August 1st or you might have to do what we filled in for ya

Felicia, it is all in good fun, we have had some killer hats in past years! My favorite of all time was the sushi one Kristi Brokaw did, it really was spectacular, little tables and chairs, sushi, plum branch, wow!

The PJ's are for Pajama Jam, we all partner up (by draw) and have a time limit with a swap of beads in the middle, my favorite part!

Suz, yep, I am getting super excited too! The crucible tank is here, the crucibles too, wooooohoooo!

I just confirmed the surprise guest artists, we are going to have an amazing line-up! Bring your cameras, these guys are HOT!

I do want to remind folks that this is a closed, private event for attendees only. Spouses, kids, friends and pets cannot be allowed inside venue due to liabilities with hot glass.

Also, the meet and greet will be Wed night from 6-9pm at my home with live glassblowing and lampworking demos, yummy snacks and great bead/glass exchanges! Please bring your beverage of choice and it is pot luck munchies for anyone who wants to bring anything. Directions/address will be in last GS update mid August.

I am swamped with details but getting ready for another winter's worth of inspiration....it always fills my head with wonder!
Hugs, deb

Wahoo! I can't wait you guys! I hardly ever get time to check out LE but reading about Glass Stock gets me so STOKED!! I'm the one to email your demo info to, at dvmeow@aol.com. The "v" is not a typo, even though I'm "Dr. Meow" I couldn't get that on my aol account so dvm = doctor of vet. med. was close enough. Tell me the demo, the type of glass, torch or nontorch technique, etc. I'm getting very excited by seeing already what people will be demoing. Generally there is a flow chart for boro demos, then one for soft glass demos, then one for "nontorch" demos that may be fused glass techniques, jewelry techniques, PMC, electroforming demo/discussion, whatever! So don't be scared, just share something you think is really cool. There is so much going on that you certainly won't feel like the whole world is watching you. I always want to see EVERY demo (which is totally impossible)!!! See you all SOON Yippee!!!
