I believe Michael Barley teaches this - "baleen" technique.

I get a similar effect by applying the colors on the mandrel, putting clear in between each row, DO NO melt in, then more clea to encase. Then I mash! and add more clear....This one looks like it is half clear and half transparent yellow or brown??

I agree - Michael Barley technique. And he does teach this in class. If you ever get a chance to take a class with him - JUMP ON IT! I had so much fun, and learned so much.
My beads were IMMEDIATELY improved after his class.

Unless you're talking about the electroforming on the bead. If it's the copper/metallic part that you like, search the forums for electoforming.

I'd like to learn this as well - Unfortunately Michael Barley's schedule isn't taking him to Florida any time soon... I have an idea for adapting it to borosilicate.

Anyone care to share? I'm all ears =)

I read somewhere that Michael said he had an "Aha" when he was trying to make baleen and it involved an knife.

Thanks for that tip! It's not what I was looking for (I want to make belly scales for a dragon), but it's something else I was looking for.

In one of the bead magazine feature articles on Michael Barley, he says how he does that. As far as I remember, he cuts the color with a razor blade in multiple cuts and covers it with transparent. There have been two feature articles on him recently; one in Bead and Button and the other in Beadwork.

That isn't the Barley method, his don't show through to the core. I know this because I have taken his class. More likely this is done with clear glass as said above. Michael starts with a clear base but then covers it with white, ivory or some other color.

This is a guess but I think this has a transparent base, topped with an encased white ribbon cane. Then transparent color encasing. Topped off by electroforning.

He does use a razor blade to make the cuts. I have used the blade to do these beads.

As you can see these arn't transparent to the core of the bead like the one above.

If you put down transparent first, then a layer of opaque, then cut and encased, you might be able to get an effect like that.

I believe that the best way to find out is to experiment.

Yep, you get the effect like that if you're more aggressive with your cuts and if your encasing of opaque is thin. I took his class, too.

You are right you could get that if you cut into a clear. The cuts are just so wide is why I don't think they are cuts.

I have been trying to learn this technique based on the information in this thread with no luck at all. I've tried doing a transparent base with a think stripe of some opaque and then creasing lines in it with a razor and then putting clear or a light transparent over it. I don't get anything close to this kind of look. I've tried cutting in really deep and just can't get it. I wish I could take a Michael Barley class. He doesn't teach anywhere even close to me or I would take it in a heartbeat. I see so many beads here that are made from his techniques. What an awesome class that must be. So, if anyone understands this technique and can elaborate a little more on how to do it or anything even close to it, I would really appreciate it. I've been trying even before I saw this thread to practice it but I've gone through countless attempts and have nothing. I am at a loss for anything to try next to get it. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share the information!!

My best guess on this would be:

1. Clear base
2. opaque covering
3. thin clear encasing
4. heat and (using razor tool) push straight down almost to
mandrel. Repeat XXX times.

5. heat bead and round out.
6 encase more if you want to - or add decorations to bead.

Try that - see if it works (and if it doesn't - post a pic of that you got
anyway. One man's crappy bead is another man's breakthrough).

It was in the April '07 issue of B&B magazine. I have the issue, but I also found a link to the article. I've yet to try it myself, but you all have inspired me so next torch time:

Okay, here is what I got by attempting this technique. Feel free to laugh out loud. I am clearly missing something important.

Thanks so much for posting that article too. I would LOVE to take his class.

Looks like you're not being aggressive enough with the cuts.
You need to double or triple the amount of cuts there.
