Question Is bead release toxic?

I've been sorting through my piles of beads, pulling out ones that are too ugly to sell or use in my jewelry. I'd like to clean them out a little better, then put them in the bottom of my birdbath out front... but I want to make sure that any bead release remaining will not harm the birds that use or drink out of the bath. I know I won't be able to remove ALL of it... but I will clean them up a bit more.

Anyone have any knowledge about this? Bad idea?

The main ingredient in most bead release is the same as (or very similar to) ceramic kiln wash. Depending on what brand of release you are using, it will certainly contain other ingredients, possibly including graphite and other substances. To research the potential toxicity of a substance, you can google the MSDS (material safety data sheet) of that material. For instance, here's a link to the MSDS for ceramic kiln wash: http://www.lagunaclay.com/msds/pdf/5refract/rf504.pdf

You could also contact the manufacturer of the bead release you are using and ask them for an MSDS (they probably will refuse on the basis of it being a proprietary formula), or just ask them your original question, or ask them if they are adding anything that might be toxic to birds...

Good luck, and make sure you come back and tell us what you find out!

I'd say not poisonous....but you def don't want to breathe it in.

One of my cats took a liking to my cleaning water....I wondered where it was going, assumed evaporation.

He's not dead yet.

Just a little bit of vinegar will deter the critters from wanting your quench water.

You'll need to ask the specific manufacturer but FosterFire is not. You could eat it and your biggest risk would be some constipation, just drink lots of water. It's not going to hurt a cat or dog if they lick it or eat it.
