Can I Use Aluminum Rolled Flashing

Hi again, can I use aluminum rolled flashing for my table top or anywhere around my torching area? I didn't see this anywhere in the table top thread.

Don't see any reason why not. But be aware of the edges if you have any exposed as they can be sharp.

You can duct tape the edges to the sides of the table and replace when they get burned from flying frit....

Check with your local printing firm to see if they have any offset press aluminum plates that are used. In many cases these are sold to reclaim the aluminum after use. These would be much larger than flashing and more suitable to your needs. i.e. the plates have a one time use and then are disposed of.

Do not get the paper backed plates. Only the solid aluminum ones. Perhaps they will sell you a few for the cost of the reclaimed metal.

Wont cover whole bench top, but if under torch it will catch any falling hot glass, and has nice lip to keep things from rolling off.... I had one once on my bench now it is on garage floor under my leaky car....

They also may be available at any local auto parts stores ....

You know Dale that is interesting, I really never saw that anything like that, maybe I'll check into that also. I'll check out the auto parts store.

I found some storage cabinets, a 2 door tall one and 2 shorter ones and a nice large heavy shelve unit I plan on using for my glass rods and whatnot. I got them from the auction. Some other things too. This is starting to be fun. lol

I used the heavy aluminum flashing for my table top and it works great! Sometimes I use it as the world's biggest marver. I also fashioned my fume hood out of the stuff.

I thought you weren't supposed to get galvanized hot?

I have aluminum for all of the edges and areas that my stainless top doesn't touch. My hood is made from a combo of aluminum and galvanized. The galvanized portion isn't in an area that gets warm or has hot glass on it.

Galvanizing is simply a coating of Zinc. If it gets hot enough to melt and or vaporize the zinc coating then you can get zinc poisoning with long exposure. Pretty much cured by drinking milk, at least that's what we did in the day. Zinc melts at 787 deg F so that point is easily reached if in direct flame contact. Under normal circumstances it should not be a problem in the studio.

I use aluminum flashing. I bent it over the edge of my table and tacked it down so that I don't have a sharp edge.

It does have a glare to it that I don't really like. I am going to look for a dark color when the mood strikes me! Otherwise, all is good with it.

I bought roof flashing which is usually used for where two roofs meet. We put a plank on top of the middle crease and walked along it to straighten the metal. It is painted black on one side and grey on the other. Works like a charm! I also folded it over the ends to eliminate sharp edges. For the workstations, all but one has a creation station (need another) so any sharp edges are not really an issue.

That's what I use. Of course, I work in the printing industry, so I have tons of them at my disposal. And last time I checked they were bringing like 20¢ a pound so it's hardly worth doing anything with them.

Go in on a Friday when everyone is getting ready for the weekend and ask nicely. I'll be they will give you all the plates you can carry.
