Reduced Glass Surfaces
Here's a link to an article on surface analysis of art glass that's just been published in Microscopy Today. One you get to the home page to to Materials Applications (page 28 ).

Thanks Linda. Getting the real science out on this has been a major undertaking but it's been worth it. It's taken about a year to get it out in print, nothing happens in a hurry.

Robert, very interesting.... and a little scary. Have you studied any Double Helix, TAG, or Precision reduction glasses?
On another note, does anyone know if MSDS sheets are available for our various glasses?

There are a host of reduction glasses out there that I have not had time to look at (yet). I have never seen a MSDS for any glass rod product, though they might exist somewhere.

Great article. This industry really needs advocates like you to help get the safety word out there. Much appreciated!

Thank you for this article, Robert! My co-worker gave me a copy of Microscopy Today and bookmarked the article for me. It is very informative to know that the reduced surfaces are much more than silver as well as what happens at the glass surface when it is being manipulated between torch settings.

Cool article. Thanks for sharing. I'm not surprised by the result. So many different minerals go into the glass to get the color and sheen needed.
BTW Gaffer gives out MSDS sheets with their glas. I'm pretty sure it is Gaffer.

Thank you, Robert, for this very informative article. Seeing the chemical test results on the glass was a real eye-opener.
Many thanks.

What an excellent article!! Hopefully this will advocate knowing what chemicals are in the glass we use - I still hear of so many people not using adequate ventilation, and this is a great resource to show how important it is!
