and 'Hollow Forms' - June 28-29, 2011

Natural Forms in Glass Art

This class will be devoted to the beautiful and compelling forms, textures, and colors that occur in nature, how they relate to art, and how best to construct them in borosilicate glass. We will make a concentrated study of what makes these natural components so compelling and why their use is a central aspect of representational, abstract, and surreal art. We will design pieces to test our ideas and to express our feelings. There will be demonstrations, discussions, and presentations. This class is open to students of all levels, but some flameworking experience would be helpful.

Hollow Forms

This class will focus on the use of hollow forms in freeform borosilicate glass sculpture. Hollow forms allow the artist to create shapes that are difficult or impossible to make using solid sculpted glass. We will experiment with sculpting and blowing techniques as well as surface applications like complex coloration and texturing. This class can be taken by itself or as a continuation of the "Natural Forms" class immediately preceding it. Some prior flameworking experience will be required for this class.

Two great back-to-back classes with one of the best teachers!

And summer on the coast of Maine can't be beat!

Playing with Fire! is located right in town in scenic Rockland, just steps from the harbor, galleries, restaurants, and the Farnsworth Art Museum!

I can't even begin to recommend Robert as a teacher highly enough!! He really has a way of pushing his students beyond their comfort zone, inspiring them to branch out to try new things and develop new skills! He is awesome and down to earth and really creates an atmosphere that promotes experimentation and learning. If you can possibly do it in any way, take one of these classes!!! I promise you won't regret it. I can't believe the class isn't full yet!!
