Reef marble/pendant question, please
Hi, all. I've pretty much figured out most of the things in reef-like marbles but can't wrap my head around the parts that look like tubes instead of poked dots. Of course, I can't find a photo of what I was looking for.
Anyone have any ideas how do to them? Thanks in advance!

How I do them is I take a clear 8 mm rod and encase it with an outside color and melt it smooth taking care not to twist or bend to much. Then I heat the gather up and pull to the thickness I want the tubes. When it is cool I cut it into small 'millie'. I use those small 'milli' instead of plain dots. To use them I hold with tweezers and flash the 'milli' in the flame and heat up the spot i want to stick it on then press together then apply heat carefully to melt on.

That's what I was afraid of....... my first thought was millie but sheesh my pendants aren't that big and trying to hold, heat and place ..... Hoping that there was some magic trick... lol... Thanks, Deb, for taking the time to reply

Try making cane but don't cut off milli. Then, heat the spot where you want the tube. Press the COLD cane to the hot glass. Allow to cool then snap off. Pretty common way to apply milli in cane form. Practice will make perfect, (I'm still practicing) and seems to work better with smaller diameter cane (4-5 mm) at least for me, should work good in an implosion, I typically use that method for eye cane though.
Good luck

Queenofswords ~ These are only poked dots.
Chris ~ I did make a small milli and did the spot heat and snap off. Have done that with pulled down Momka for milli's. It is in the kiln now so we shall see the result in the morning. Thanks!

I have done this much like a flower petal that striped... made a circle with a twistie, or twisted it striped cane as I laid it down, anda dot in the middle of another color, compress as usual... this was dont on a blown base, not a compressed disc

You can try laying out milli and frits on a graphite marver, pressing onto them too.

Not necessary to make milli's and not necessary to
snap anything off. I made my cane and stretched
it to about 8 inches long. Then I take a pair of
nippers and nip the end of the cane to get a straight,
flat end. I heat up the end of the cane until it is red,
put the flame on the maria, and stick the flat end of
the cane onto the maria, firmly. Then I apply a thin,
sharp flame to the cane about 1/8" above where it is
stuck to the maria and melt it off, just like you would
when placing a dot on a maria. To make the next
coral, or barnicle (or whatever you want to call it) just
nip off the end of your cane again so that it is straight
and flat and repeat as above. So, it's nip straight, stick
onto maria, burn off, nip straight, stick onto maira......
Don't make this any harder than necessary!

Gerald!!!! That's it! I love your marbles. Thank you!
I made one stab at it last evening so will see the results as soon as I walk my bod out there. My problem is that my pendants are small ~ 1 1/4" finished and getting all that stuff on the maria is hard for these old eyes... lol...

Yes, getting all that onto the maria is hard, but I came up with a solution (aside from using a bubble instead of a maria). I'll take some pictures and try to get my solution on here in a week or so.

Just a thought.....do you guys work with regular vision correction?
I had my boro split lenses made in my magnification vision correction prescription,
and I can tell ya, there just aint no other way. My pendant are small too, and I can
cram lots of stuff onto the maria, ya just gotta make what is small bigger.
I do that with all problems I have.
Hi Leslie! how's the weather? your pendant is very nice.

Waving at Mary K!!! Yes, old eyes and I use stick in magnification. Lots of snow.... 20+ inches followed by another 6 yesterday. Kind of tired of winter...
Okay, first shot at mille (orange)in boro ~ I should have put the mille in before I did the twistie with Fools Gold (bubbled a lot but I like the look). I also spot heated and plunged and broke off which created a bubble on the end.

Ok I tried it, made some cane, and it worked well. I just need to choose better colors for the cane. the ones I made were blah.

99% of the canes I make for the reef marbles are done with crayon colors. They are always dense and bright.

I've always done them differently. I make a striped cane using any number of colors, and when I'm pulling it thinner I twist a lot. I heat up the area where I want the barnacle, and apply it in a circle, twisting even more. Then I put a dot in the middle -- or maybe I've put the dot in first; it doesn't matter as long as the circle doesn't touch the dot -- and proceed with the implosion as usual. It never even occurred to me to try milli! But now that I know I think I'll try that as well.

Would love to see a picture of the way you used to do it. I'm always (well, occasionally, not always) thinking of new things to stick into a seafloor (reef) marble.

The millies look more like tube worms, at least the ones I'm thinking of. Just so you know.

Another Reef Marble, using 'nip straight, stick onto maria, burn off' method

what you're describing there is making a murrini cane (you're just taking off slices in a different way), although I'm not sure why you're taking the extra step of pulling it off in the flame and then the other extra step of having to cut it with nippers instead of stick and snap like Bunyip does. The ends of the stick and snap murrini close up as you implode anyway. It seems to me you're making it harder than necessary with added steps as well as using more glass.
But I have to add that if you're successful doing it a certain way and it works well for you, then you must be doing it right, there's never just one "correct" way of doing something and your reef marbles certainly look like your way is working well for you.
My preferred methods are the stick and snap murrini cane way and earlbacher's way of putting on rings, except I don't premake them, I draw then on and snap. I like doing things in as few steps as I can, so it includes a fair amount of snapping cane
These are from a few years ago ...
Anyone heard from Stephan Hagstrom? He used to be the master of this style of marble, but I haven't seen him around in a loooong time ...

Funny you should mention him. I wanted to buy one of his DVDs today and his website is down and so is his etsy store.
All of the reefs look fantastic! I haven't had a good one yet. Canes too big or something I guess.
