I just looked up the Nortel mega minor and it says.
RECOMMENDED OPERATING PRESSURES:
.25 to 5 psi of Gas and 5 to 15 PSI of Oxygen
does anyone have anything bad or good to say in comparision to the cricket?

Wow, hadn't we've been talking about GTT's newest torch called "Scorpion" lately?

Hey - no worries Bob. Looks like you are doing your homework. I have seen the cricket compared to a nortel minor, but not to a mega minor - so I'm no help. My minor does great on a 5lpm concentrator but I have heard that the cricket can get a much hotter flame w/ the same set up. I too am waiting on the call to pay for the scorpion I ordered last year.
Kirima - I would be soooo frustrated if I was the first one to order the scorpion and still waiting! I hope you get your soon!

I went from a Mega Minor to the Cricket. I would say offhand that the Mega Minor has a bushier flame - the Cricket more pinpoint. The Cricket might be just a touch hotter but not significantly as far as I recall.
Another torch that was made to run on low pressures it the Betta. I think someone was selling one in the Garage Sale recently?
If you're looking for a Cricket and can't get a hold of GTT why not get in touch with Kimberley (Kbinkster) here? She's always ready and willing to help and I do believe she is now selling the Crickets directly?
Have you also considered a MiniCC?
Good luck to you. There are tons of options that will fit your setup. You just need to pick one and go. You can always upgrade/change your setup if you find it isn't quite what you were looking for. Torch resale is always pretty good.

Thanks for all the good info, I bought my oxycon from Kimberley (what a great person to deal with). I have made up my mind and I'm going to wait for the cricket.
Keeping with the title of the thread, I'm sure as soon as I get my cricket I will be ordering a scorpion and another oxycon from Kimberley. I'm assuming the scorpion runs well on two 5 lpm oxycons....That would be my dream set up, hopefully that would last me awhile.

Debra, is your gas just household pressure?

Kathy, yes I am running on gas with household pressure. I have ran a mini CC, Minor, Bobcat and now a scorpion on this and they all do fine. I also have a mega minor which I haven't tried yet.
I am sure I could get a hotter flame on propane and tanked oxy, but I love using gas. One day I will get a booster.
The last couple of days I have been working on the scorpion. I kept thinking since the center fire was a cricket that I was down grading in some sense because I was running a bobcat before. But the center fire seems larger to me than my bobcat and very hot! Having the outer fire is a plus also. Off mandrel boro work seemed to not take as long and I still have oxy to spare with my ex10. Another thing, I seem to have more radiant heat than I did with the Bobcat. It could be my imagination. I would like to hear what everyone else thinks about theirs.

Okay, I am officially in LOVE! The Scorpion is doing everything I hoped it would do and even more. Of course going into a new torch slowly is the best thing. Start out with simple beads and work your way up. Well.....not so much my thing. First of all I haven't been on the torch since July, except for one day doing simple beads about two weeks ago. So, today, new torch hooked up and ready to go and zoom, right into a dragon! Perfect, no cracking. I admit it was a smaller dragon, so I thought to myself, it worked well on the small dragon, but will it work on a large dragon. An hour later and the large dragon was in the kiln also. Oh, btw, I also used reduction glass on each one, because of course one must see how the torch works with reduction. PERFECT! I think it was even better than the Cheetah, and I loved the reduction abilities of that torch. Then I did one bead and just could not stop the torching session without trying a fish. So, I did a triggerfish with those long flowing top and bottom fins (in reduction glass of course). The large dragon was probably 4 inches long, whilethe fish was probably 4 inches from top to bottom and 3 inches from nose to tail.
What did I learn? I learned that the torch with both inside and outside rings on is much hotter than my Cheetah. It also has more radiant heat, which is good for keeping my sculptures warm, but hot on the face. Oh, well, one must sacrifice for their art. I have decided that I need to turn the OG20 down because I am getting way too much volume of oxy to run the Cricket flame without the outside flame on. Wow, did it hiss. Of course I still ran the inside flame, but left the outside oxy on, so got a really pinpoint flame.
Summation: I really love this torch. I think it will be better for what I do with the oxygen supply I have. The versatility cannot be beat, as far as I am concerned. I highly recommend it.

Hi Pam,
I'm also running mine on an OG20. What did you adjust yours to? I was just thinking last night that I might need to turn it down also. My Oxy hisses to much also. Any advice would be great! I'm loving the torch also. Even with the center cricket on only I think it's hotter than my Lynx. Is that possible? Then I open up the outer ring & it's great for large beads. I'll try to post some pics later. I'd love to see the dragon when it comes out of the kiln. Thanks in advance for your help.
Debbie

Debbie, the instructions say that the oxy pressure should be from 5 to 10, so I think I will turn mine down to 10 and see how that works. I won't be home tomorrow to play as it is a "medical" day, but by Wednesday I should be able to post a pic of the dragons. I can't wait to be able to play again with it. Let me know what you try and how it works.

Pressure, Squid. Should I adjust the lpm also? Hadn't thought about that.

What I noticed most compared to my Lynx is the radiant heat. This little torch gets really hot all around my work area, much more than the Lynx. I ran it on one M15 at about 6 and my propane at 4.5. I made a boro pendant about 2 1/4 " long without any problem (running both inner and outer flame). I didn't get it out of the kiln yet so I'll let you know how the color turned out later. It looked good when it went into the kiln.

Was your flame neutral? With hissing, sounds like it may have been oxidizing.

Well, I could have turned the gas up, but the flame would have been very strong, which is not what I wanted. With all the volume at a higher pressure going through the "cricket" ports, I think it just overpowered the cricket-size flame. And yes, with the fuel at it's normal setting as it was with both inside and outside rings going in a neutral flame, when I turned the outside flame off, both oxy and fuel, the flame became very oxidizing, and thus hissing.

well Pam it was definately the right move. I turned the pressure down to 10 & it doesn't hiss any more. I like the flame much better too. I only worked with the inner cricket so far. Later I'll make some bigger beads & see how it feels.
Later,Debbie

Oh, great, Debbie. Since I mostly work using both flames, we'll be able to have info on both ends of this rainbow. Thanks for letting me know.

Lisa I tried boro tubing last night! works great! That is more than I can say for my point pulling effort!
It sure uses a lot less oxygen than the bobcat even with the other flame. You all would of laughed last night when I went from boro to soft glass and tried to pull a stringer. I melted a big blob on to the table! LOL!

Lisa, I didn't try boro tubing today, but I will the next time I get a chance to torch. My guess is, from the type flame, that it should be good.
Okay, here are pics from beads made on the Scorpion earlier today. They are made from Bullseye glass. I put them on top of the ruler to give you an idea of size, but then blocked some of the numbers, sorry. Oh, and I just took them on a piece of white paper in front of the computer, so the color is not really great.

Those of you using a Lynx or a Cheetah, and are now using the Scorpion. Do you miss the triple mix feature.

I love that dragon, Pam. He's awesome.
Is there anyone working on a Knight Bullet who got the Scorpion? I'd love to hear a comparison of those.
I heard from GTT today and it looks like mine is a few weeks away yet.
