Default using Tungsten to drill?

I have known for years how to heat up a tungsten rod and drill holes but the result is smokey leaves a mess on the inside of the hole and a mess on the inside of the bead what am I doing wrong?

Drill glass? Use a diamond bit, and have the glass in a container of water w/ wood or something underneath so you do go through your container.

And thanks from me, I was misreading the question, thinking "drilling" into cold glass, not poking a hole while making the item.
