Tumbling question....
I just purchased a Harbor Freight 3 lb tumbler, 200 grit and pyramid media according to Kalera's suggestions in the "Ask Me Anything" thread. My question is: I made a set of beads and melted thin stringers of Intense Black on them. The black has spread very thin and taken on a lacy effect. I would like to frost the beads but afraid the tumbling will wear off the lacy glass. Am I correct in thinking this? It will be the first time I've used the tumbler.

I can't recall if I've done any IB on mine, but can't imagine it taking all the black off if it's melted into the base. Could you just make a test bead to try before you do the entire set?

Thanks Eileen...yes, I can run a test bead and check it hourly to see how much of the surface will come off...if any.

Yes, that part I got, but more specifically, what is it made from? All I know
about for use in a tumbler is silicone carbide or stainless steel shot....

Sorry Barbara. It's called Green Media. Scroll down on this page: http://www.therockshed.com/grit2.html and you'll find it listed. Kalera said she fills her tumbler about halfway with water, adds a drop of Dawn soap, 1 tsp 200 silicone carbide, 1/4 cup of green media and her beads. She tumbles overnight. Hope this helps

Thanks, KAS! The only pyramid tumbler stuff that I knew about was from Harbor Freight and is used to remove rust - tough stuff, great on old skeleton keys, but not nice for glass.

Maybe someone else will chime in and verify that this stuff is OK for glass but quite sure Kalera recommended it. She said she uses the media until it wears down to tiny pieces and the powder is no longer effective. My tumbler has not been delivered yet so cannot test.

I just use the silicon carbide with some of my tester small beads, have never tried that media so don't know. I don't do it so long though using the beads (just an hour or three), so maybe you get a finer finish using the media?

Use the ceramic media plus SC 500 from the Rock Shed with a vibrating tumbler. Takes from one to two hours to turn shinny beads into a faux sea glass look.
