Default MAPP gas with HH

Are MAPP gas still available or are they gone forever due to the recall? Are they still safe?

Thanks!

Would you mind sending me a link of which are the fat boys? And do they work well? How many hours does one can last? I have never used a hh before, but I am desperate to torch and I cannot find a plumber in the area to put in a gas line for me.

Thank you so much for you help!

You can always work with propane oxygen torches from a bbq tank.

MAPP gas (mixture of methylacetylene (propyne) and propadiene) is gone forever... The MAP-PRO (Propylene) canister recall is resolved with new valves in canisters.... IF tanks on shelf has a white or black diamond on top of tank near relief valve it is new approved canister....

http://www.mapcylinderrecall.com/#!faq

Fat Boy is short squat canister with 16.9 oz of fuel inside vs. tall skinny canister is 14 oz of fuel inside...

Standard Tank

Fat Boy

got it! Thanks!

My studio is connected to the house, and I was told that it is not so safe to use propane when I am torching in the house. So I thought a HH with MAP-Pro would be safer.

Is the Fat boy any safer than the skinny cans?
How many hours does one can generally last?

Thank you so much!!

Any fuel as MAPP or MAP-PRO (propylene) or propane has same dangers. There is no distinction between them as for flammability or explosive quality... They are equally dangerous, anyone that tells you other wise is wrong and the information you have been given about propane vs MAP=PRO is incorrect....

The only distinction about fat boy is it has 2.9 oz more fuel so it will give you the amount of time more at torch as it takes to burn the additional 2.9 oz... Or in event of a explosion its 2.9 oz or 20 % bigger than a 14 oz cylinder... In other words more "bang"...

As for safety... With knowledge of what your using and prudent precautions you are about as safe as one can be considering what you are working with....

Thank you Dale! I really appreciate your knowledge. So is there some truth in Natural Gas being safer than Propane?

Some but not a whole lot.... NG is also a fuel, it is explosive if concentrated... Main difference is it has specific gravity lighter then air, where it will float upwards and dissipate when leaking, where as propane and propylene has specific gravity of heavier than air and will float downward and pool in any low areas when leaking (this why basement studios need to be extra cautious with propane as a fuel) ....

Main difference is NG burns a little cooler than propane (mixed with oxygen) and its is sometimes easier to pipe into studio (does not require the "tank" or regulator)...

Any fuel is dangerous and not really "safer" than any other (for all practical purposes and applied to our type of work) ...
