Smile Fine Art Photography?

Hi Everyone-

Maybe this is a stupid question, but I am hoping for some help

I am submitting two pieces to a juried art show, and they ask for the pictures to have (and I quote): "Photographs must contain a fine-craft element." So are they talking about the photography (i.e.: studio quality photos), or the work itself has to be a piece of fine art?

I have reread this 20 times and I think I'm more confused than when I started I think it's too late to order gradiant paper for the background, does anyone have any suggestions? I have tried to print my own in the past and it is too pixalated. Thanks, Laura

I'm guessing that they mean the object needs to be or mostly be "fine craft" (it sounds like they are allowing for some elements to be purchased like clasps or accent beads). Though I agree the phrase doesn't make sense.

The nicer the picture the more it is going to help, in any case.

If you're near a Kinko's you can take your gradient file there and print it out on their laser printers. It makes a nice gradient

Hi Shelby-

Thank you somuch, that is what I was thinking, but just wanted another opinion I never thought about taking it to Kinko's, I will definitely do that. I have a link to Cynthia's gradient files, but they just don't print out the way I'd like.

Thanks again for your help! Laura

In the on-line photography world, "fine art photography" is usually a euphemism for nudes and soft porn. I know that probably isn't what they're after! The request for a "fine-craft element" is ambiguous and confusing; I have to wonder if they know what it means themselves. Is there any way to ask them?

Hi Conrad-

That is hilarious I doubt that is what they are asking for! I was going to call them, but didn't want to ask an idiotic question- this is the first time I have ever entered a juried show and thought it was a common term and I just didn't understand.

Glad I'm not the only one. Anyhow, I am planning on taking pictures tonight in several differnt backgrounds. My idea is to make the bracelets look like a piece of sculpture, hopefully that satisfies the "fine craft element" Thanks for the response- Laura

You’re not wrong to be confused, that’s for sure.
