Default Herkimer diamonds

I was told that Herkimer diamonds would work with boro. I tried two different sizes, and they both cracked when I put hot clear glass on them. I thought maybe I should start them in the kiln first? Any help would be appreciated.

They are pretty much pure quartz. So, COE 33 and COE 0. Sounds like trouble to me.

good question. there is a guy who encases real diamonds in boro, and puts them in the stems of wine glasses.
aren't Herk diamonds the same as "regular" diamonds, in so far as what they're made of?

yes i'd try warming them in the kiln first...and use as small a chunk as you can.

Herkimer diamonds are a high purity quartz, COE of about 5. Diamonds are pure (more or less) crystalized carbon. Huge difference in chemical and physical properties.

I know there was some one on face book that said he had encased a Herkimer diamonds and show picture but later admitted the picture were of it still hot and that it always checked or cracked when it came out of the kiln
so as the other have said the COE is off and it dose not work.

They don't all crack. You just have to make sure you don't use a piece of herkimer too large and that it is imbedded fairly deep

Some do crack though. I haven't had such good luck recently. I think the problem I have had is the herkimer not being centered and also too close to the surface.

it's a shame that herk diamonds "fizz" like that even if they don't crack.....

That is checked at the surface of the stone. They are double terminated quartz crystals.

Yes, mine look fizzy like that. I guess I was expecting to see all the facets. Even still, nice effect. Thanks for all the great help.

Over time you can expect the checking at the surface of the crystal to grow in response to warming and cooling of the piece. It may take a while but it will crack.
