Katja -

I've never made one, but make sure you're adding white dots to your base as well as black ones, and melt them all in at the same time so you can get similar-sized "cells."

I've drawn many of these over the years. (Although I didn't draw this one)
They're tricky...a pentagon surrounded by hexagons, repeat.
Good luck!

I just attempted these a few weeks ago. They're a lot harder than they look. I made about 11 beads and only got one to have the dots distort sort of how they're supposed to.

I used a base of black in hopes that I could get the lines between the "patches", but that doesn't work too well.

This week, I was planning on using a white base to see how that works.

I'll post pics as soon as I have something to show you.

Okie dokie! I've attached a picture of two versions of soccer balls. While neither are very good, I think the one made on a black base looks more "realistic".

The dots on the white-based bead didn't really distort since the black glass is "stiffer" than the white. As such, the black dots pushed away the white ones, leaving large round black dots (all of the dots were the same size).

If anything, maybe this'll give you someplace to start.

Good luck!

Karla

Edited to add: Wow...sorry for the really crappy picture. I used my small digital camera and didn't really have enough light. I'll try and fix that tonight.

Not that I've made a soccer ball, but I think I would be tempted to try adding the dots and melting about 1/2 way down and then using my brass shaper to flatten the surface but leaving the dot slightly raised....it could look like the seams between the "patches" on the ball. Using the shaper would also let you coax the sides into a closer shape. Just my 2 cents worth....
