Default Enthusiastic responses: more pictures

Considering you enthusiastic responses, I thought I'd post some more pics.

One of the things I love about these places, is how engrained the glass and beading is in everything you see. Here are two examples of street names:
One is Jablonec, one in Neugablonz. Both mean : Bead street

Some more pictures of another bead 'pressing' factory/workshop in Czech.

An antique bead spinner in action

The making of 'waxed' beads/pearls: the plain white beads are strung on racks and dipped into a coating bath to make them pearlescent.

Default And some more...

Some pictures of the very messy and very cool antique/junk shops in Jablonec. Digging is required. So is washing up afterwards.

One of the beautiful stained glass windows in one of the old villas of one of the bead exporters in Jablonec, Heinrich Hoffman. An article by me on this villa was also published in the journal of the Great Britain Bead society. The villa is now a police station.

An image from an old factory in Idar Oberstein. they used to make metal stampings, filligree and mostly chain here for watches and jewelry. All of these machines are about one hundred years old. A great sight.

The museum of glass and jewelry in Jablonec, another great building.

Inside the museum was this time also an exhibit on the main current producer, Preciosa. They made a display wall of their pressing rods. Note: all these rods are about a yard long.....

Default Final pictures

Another lampworker busy making beads. Again: notice how different her position is to (I think) most of us.

Remaining bits of glass hollow blown beads. These are the ends through which the inside coating would have been sucked into the glass tube of beads.

A set of pressing tongs, and some molds.

One more thing I found in Lauscha....a completely fallen apart glass factory. Very cool to see, but obviously not very safe.

Dumped here, I saw a bag of pieces of glass from a workshop that made glass dolls and animal eyes. Picked up some glass there that may produce some beads when I get back.

And finally: the statue of a lampworker, perched on a local building.

Default glass waste

jhamilton, it is not that much, as this picture shows. The pieces are from blowing tiny glass eyes, so they are very small. This pictures shows a few trashbags full of the stuff.

Jhamilton, even though it is never okay to dump stuff, this was dumped on the site of the old glass factory. This place was littered with old stuff, bricks, metal, and has been abandoned for about 25 years.

Ingetraud: visiting Reichenbach was tricky. I did not get to go inside into a warehouse like at Kugler. They only allow wholesale customers to come in after an appointment. Also, they were just finishing up orders before their summer break. I did manage to buy a couple of samples, but did not get any further than the hallway. Preciosa and Kugler were fairly easy to visit.

When were you there? I was at Reichenbach this past July (shortly before they shut down for summer break). They were very friendly and informative and gave me a full blown tour of the whole place. I had emailed them ahead of time asking if I could come for a visit and they were fine with it.

Your pictures are fantastic. Thanks so much for sharing your journey with us! I am still sorting through the hundreds of pictures I took so I can blog about my visit too. I really wanted to walk out of there with 50 pounds of glass but managed to limit myself to just what would fit inside a poster tube - which wasn't much at all.

Leslie, glad you had a more extensive visit at Reichenbach. I did not email in advance as I did not know if I was going to make it to the factory. It was very hot, and I was relying on public transport. My main focus in Neugablonz was to learn more about the history of the beadmaking in this town. The factory was a bonus. The people helping me were friendly, it was just bad timing on my part.
Where did you get to go in Neugablonz? Would love to hear more of your experiences. Other glass/bead places?

I don't have anything directly to add.

For more information on beadmaking practices, ARTCO Inc. has an informative video:
http://www.artcoinc.com/bohemian_beadmaking.php

More German lampworking information is here, including another source for the cast iron rod warmers:

De Anza, I have that video on Bohemian beadmaking. Lots of familiar places as they do not just visit Jablonec, but also Lauscha and Neugablonz. The footage is a bit dated, but the techniques haven't changed, and it a very interesting video.
